I was given the opportunity to screen this movie with a guest in exchange for this review. All opinions expressed here are honest and my own.
I am sure that by now you have heard the hype about Disney’s ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY or have even seen the hilarious commercials. Just the trailer alone was filled with gut-wrenching laughter, so I was very excited when I received the invite as a blogger to review the film before it was released into theaters today!
What is ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY about? Here is a brief summary:
Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander (Ed Oxenbould) as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life—a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom (Jennifer Garner), dad (Steve Carell), brother (Dylan Minnette) and sister (Kerris Dorsey) all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn’t had one. “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” directed by Independent Spirit Award-winner Miguel Arteta (“The Good Girl,” “Cedar Rapids,” “Youth in Revolt”) from a screenplay by Rob Lieber, is a 21 Laps Entertainment/Jim Henson Company production. The film hits theaters nationwide Oct. 10, 2014.

One of my favorite actresses is Jennifer Garner so I was so excited when I saw she played the mom in this movie and of course Steve Carell, well he’s just hilarious!
I got to bring my 11 year old to screen the movie. She was giggling so much throughout right along with me, it was so cute and a fun time. I think it’s a fun family film however, there are just a few things I want to point out as a parent which may be concerning especially when it comes to your child’s age.
- The mom (Played by Jennifer Garner) walks in on her son in the bathroom who was supposedly naked . You only see his face and towel, but the idea is there. This wasn’t so bad of course but it’s there.
- When the oldest son is driving their family mini-van, the mom places her hand on her son’s leg to address an issue. He kind of gets embarrassed and the mom picks up on that and says the word p-e-n-i-s over and over to make a joke on how many she has seen in the family since she has 3 boys and a hubby. Ha!
- One of Alexander’s classmates snaps a camera phone shot of him and then crops his face to female bodies. One being a skimpy bikini on a real woman’s body. This is shown twice in the movie.
- Towards the end of the movie, the parents plan a fun birthday party for Alexander. Alexander likes all things Australia. 3 Australian cowboys show up with a boom box etc. Right away you get the impression, oh no, they accidentally hired strippers. How far is Disney going to go with this? Just a little on the nervous side, I had my daughter turn her head when they came out with their music and grabbed their jackets to rip open. The dad (Played by Steve Carell), sees this and runs over and yells “PG” they cowboys hear it in time and just transition to a fun dance party with the kids. Talk about phewww! LOL!
And that’s that. The movie in general is cute and funny. The acting was pretty good as well. The baby in it is an absolute cutie. Green face and all, haha. If you seen the previews, you know how and why his face turns green. I think my favorite scene is when the oldest son goes for his driver’s test. I won’t say much about that as to not ruin it for you in case you do see it. It’s so funny!
What are your thoughts? Do you think you will take your family to see it? I know that I will not be taking my 8 and 5 year old to see it as it might be over their heads and some of the scenes I really don’t want them to see. Yes, I’m a protective and anal mom! Haha!
