A new study has revealed that Michigan ranks 25th most birthing-friendly state in the U.S.
The research by Birth Injury Lawyers Group analyzed birthing-friendly hospitals’ data from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The study compared the number of birthing-friendly hospitals to each state’s population of children aged 0-4 to identify where families have the greatest access to birthing-friendly care.
Ranking 25th, Michigan features 14.0 hospitals per 100,000 children aged 0-4, slightly above the national average. The state’s 74 birthing-friendly facilities support a young child population of 529,962. Notable facilities include the University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, which play key roles in providing family-centered maternity and pediatric care.
A spokesperson from Birth Injury Lawyers Group commented:
“The study shows that Michigan has room for improvement in strengthening its maternal healthcare infrastructure. Birthing-friendly hospitals play an important role in ensuring safe, evidence-based care that supports mothers during labor and delivery. By expanding access, Michigan could reduce disparities and improve outcomes for families across the state.”
