Moving to a new home can take a toll on a lot of things, especially your finances. Even though moving is inevitably a huge expenditure, you can lessen the cost by being money-savvy in other areas throughout the moving process. Here are some steps you can take to save you money.

Find the Best Loan for You

When you buy your next home, unless you are independently wealthy, you will certainly need to apply for a loan. With the number of loan types available today, it can be confusing to try to figure out which one is best for your unique financial goals and situation.

One thing you may want to consider is looking into VA jumbo loans. They are specifically designed for current and former military members who qualify for a VA loan but may be searching for something a little different. A jumbo loan is well-suited for someone who wants to obtain a loan larger than what a traditional VA loan might offer. This is ideal if you are moving to a location with a higher cost of homes. It is always a smart money move to know your options for financing your next home.

Pack Your Essentials

Of course, you are going to pack your essentials. That generally goes without saying. However, in this case, your essentials include things like cleaning supplies and food items. That being said, whether or not you are able to pack these may depend on your moving company’s rules and regulations.

The reason you may want to pack things such as window cleaner, laundry detergent, dish soap, etc., is that they are expensive. Those important cleaning supplies really add up and can impact your budget if you have to replace every bottle or box in your cleaning closet. Save yourself some money and the time it will take to run to the store in your new location by carefully taping the lids or covers on each bottle and then placing them in large zip-top bags. Put each bottle upright into a box that is clearly labeled cleaning supplies. Pack this box last in the moving truck so it will be first out at the final destination.

The other category of essentials is your pantry items. You have probably invested a lot of money in curating the perfect spice collection. There might be bags of nuts, raisins, cereal, rice, and so much more still in your pantry when it is time to move. The same advice applies to these items: Tape everything shut, and then place it into a zip-top bag and finally into a box that is clearly labeled as food. Place this next to the cleaning supplies box, and you will have fewer things on your grocery list when you arrive, and once again, this tip will save you money.
