A powerful story of military service, family crisis, and the life-changing impact of generosity.

When Michaela Phillips’ father —

an Air Force veteran — became critically ill, her family was thrust into a medical and financial crisis that nearly cost Michaela the Catholic education she had known since age three.

Her father’s illness brought repeated hospitalizations, devastating medical bills, and the very real possibility that Michaela would have to leave Divine Mercy Catholic Academy in Queens, the school she calls her second home.

But her principal, Sister Francis, refused to let that happen — connecting Michaela with an anonymous “Angel” donor through Futures in Education, whose support allowed her to stay in school, graduate this year, and continue on to St. Francis Preparatory School. Michaela thrives at Divine Mercy in her studies and extracurriculars, from English literature and writing to the school newspaper, cheer team and student council.

Michaela’s story is a moving reminder of what can happen when compassion meets crisis.

In her own words: “I overheard an adult say he might not make it. As time passed, the image of my dad as a strong veteran faded away. I was losing my best friend and my hero.” She gave him all her love and prayed harder than she ever had. While his condition can not be cured, Michaela’s father is stable and improving.

As Michaela puts it: “If we all just share a little of our love and kindness, miracles can happen.”
