Cardiovascular wellness is not decided by a single meal, a single workout, or a single good decision.

If it were, everyone would have this whole thing figured out by now.

Most people already know the basics. The challenge is that heart health tends to be influenced by what happens regularly rather than occasionally.

Here are five tips for maintaining better cardiovascular wellness.

1. Healthy Habits Matter

Your heart does not know it is Monday.

A healthy breakfast at the start of a week has rescued countless weekends – but, only in people’s minds and on a wishful thinking scale.

Cardiovascular wellness is not built around good days and bad days. It is built around patterns. 

One takeaway meal every month won’t likely change anything, but bi-weekly ones will.

The habits that you repeat are the ones that matter the most.

2. Sleep Must Be Part Of The Plan

Most people will have experienced restless nights before, and we all know that a few bad nights in a row make every single thing feel harder than it should be.

Getting up, going to work, exercising, cooking – even small decisions feel like the need for energy that you just don’t have.

Sleep has a direct influence on more than just your mood, so ditch the screen time and get to bed at a decent hour.

3. Not Every Headline Changes The Rules

One day, something is good for you, and the next it’s deemed to be the worst thing to pass your lips.

Every now and then, a health headline grabs people’s attention and suddenly everyone has an opinion on it or swears blind they experienced whatever it is people are being cautioned against.

The discussion around the link between melatonin and congestive heart failure is one example. For some people, the immediate reaction is concern; for others, it’s skepticism.

5. Don’t Let The Weekends Undo The Week

Most people are fairly sensible during the week.

Meals are a little more balanced, and routines are a little more structured. Then the weekend arrives. The takeaway feels deserved. The extra glass of wine turns into two. The treadmill can wait until Monday.

None of those things is a major on its own. The trouble with that is that weekends happen, well… weekly.
