With summer approaching and hot weather on the horizon, many parents will be wondering how to protect their children’s tech items from overheating and facing long-lasting damage. Experts at QR Code Generator have revealed the best ways to keep your kids’ iPads and other devices cool in the heat.
Remove the device case
Keeping your child’s iPad or tablet in a case is a great way to protect it from damage; however, a case can be a form of insulation and will keep in any heat from the device, increasing the risk of overheating. Taking the device case off will let the heat dissipate quickly and keep it cooler. Naturally, chunky or protective cases are an important way of protecting children’s devices, but even taking it off for a few minutes in a safe environment can make a real difference.
Take the device out of travel bags or pockets
While it can be useful to keep smaller devices in pockets or tightly packed travel bags, these are small spaces, meaning the device sits closer to body heat or gets trapped without airflow. If you don’t have a shaded, open area to lay the iPad down when you’re on the go, keeping it in a loose, well-ventilated bag can also be a good alternative place to keep it.
Change the device’s settings
There are a few changes you can make in the iPad or device settings that can reduce the battery usage and energy consumption, therefore keeping it cooler. Firstly, you should turn off cellular data or Wi-Fi when your kids aren’t actively using it, or even go one step further and put the device on airplane mode. This can save the device’s battery, which is closely linked to its temperature. Another setting you can change is the screen brightness. Turning down the brightness will reduce the amount of battery being used, subsequently preventing it from heating up.
Don’t let kids overuse the device
There are apps and software, particularly high-performance gaming and video streaming apps that kids love, that can use up a lot of battery and heat up the device. If your child does need to use these apps, make sure they do so in the shade or a cooler spot, as it will make a big difference.
Keep the device out of direct sunlight
It may seem obvious, but preventing your child’s device from overheating is far easier than repairing damage caused by overheating. Simple things, such as keeping the iPad in a cooler room or in the shade, can go a long way in terms of protection, so next time you’re out or in the garden, be conscious of where your kids are leaving their devices and make sure they are in a shady or cool spot.
Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator, has commented:
“While these steps offer immediate relief for your child’s device, it’s important to remember that heat isn’t just a temporary inconvenience; in fact, it is a silent killer for lithium-ion batteries.
“Extreme heat accelerates the chemical degradation inside an iPad or tablet, meaning that even if it cools down and works normally later, you may have permanently affected its overall lifespan and battery health.
“At a time when parents are trying to make family tech last longer before upgrading, a single heatwave can accelerate the need for an expensive replacement. Protecting your kids’ tech in high temperatures isn’t just about avoiding a temporary shutdown screen; it’s about preventing the need for replacement or repair and reducing tech waste.”
