Mixed media artist shares why original art is becoming the new luxury investment and why color matters.

Today, people are choosing artwork not only for its visual appeal, but for how it makes them feel. Rather than selecting pieces simply to match the sofa or carpeting, collectors are increasingly drawn to colors and artwork that evoke emotion, creating spaces that feel more personal, expressive, and uplifting.

“We should be thoughtful about the colors we use and the artwork we put on our walls because they have a profound impact on how a space feels,” said Neha Shah, mixed-media artist and founder of Neha Shah Creative. “Color, texture, and movement can help set the tone of a home, bringing energy, calm, joy, or inspiration into everyday life. The right choices can completely change not only how a room looks, but how you feel when you’re in it.”

Color psychology explores how different shades and hues can influence emotion, mood, and behavior.

As awareness of these connections grows, more people are choosing artwork with intention, selecting palettes based on how they want a space to feel rather than simply how they want it to look.

The journal Psychonomic Bulletin & Review published a review of 128 years of psychological research examining how color influences our feelings. Researchers found consistent associations between specific hues and emotions. For example, research has linked yellow with joy and pink with positive emotions, while red and purple are often perceived as empowering. The findings reinforce that different colors can evoke distinct emotional associations and influence how people respond to what they see.

Choosing tones and original artwork with intention can help create a home that feels more personal, inviting, and filled with positivity and joy.

Shah offers the following tips for selecting artwork that can help transform both the look and feel of a space:

Know the story behind the art.

Learning about an artist, their inspiration, process, and the story behind a piece can create a deeper connection to the work and make it even more meaningful in your home.

“Begin by asking yourself how your home currently makes you feel and what feeling you want to create,” said Shah. “We all want a home that makes us feel happy, calm, and comfortable, but that atmosphere doesn’t just happen. It’s created intentionally through the colors, artwork, and choices we make.”

In addition to her original collections, Shah works directly with clients to create custom commissioned pieces inspired by their individual spaces and stories.

Beyond aesthetics, every commissioned work through Neha Shah Creative also carries a philanthropic component, with 10% of each purchase donated to a charity selected by the client.
