The Huron Valley MLK Day Committee has organized various programs in Milford in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 15. The 13th annual MLK Day Celebration in Milford, includes an art contest, March On Main event and a community food drive meal assembly event at The Suzanne Haskew Arts Center (The SHAC) in Downtown Milford.
- Using the theme “His Dream Still Lives” area residents of all ages are encouraged to participate in the art, writing and multimedia contest. With the theme in mind, participants are asked to create original artwork, write an essay, poem or other multimedia submission expressing how Dr. King’s dream exists in today’s society to help honor and celebrate his mission of nonviolence and community service. Submissions will be displayed at The SHAC the week before and during the March On Main Street Event. Prizes will be awarded to three age groups. Submissions are due Friday, Jan. 5, 2018. - On Sunday, January 14, the March On Main event will take place from Prospect Hill to The SHAC. The lineup begins at 12:15 p.m. and the ceremony commences at 1 p.m. with a brief presentation and a National Anthem performance. The community is encouraged to participate in the march that travels through downtown Milford and ends at The SHAC with a concluding ceremony, including food, beverages, music and a presentation of awards from the art contest.
- Leading up to January 15, a community food drive collection will take place from January 1 through January 15 to benefit Community Sharing Outreach Center. For two weeks, the community is asked to help donate ingredients to make Refried Bean Soup. All food donations will then be taken to The SHAC for a food drive meal assembly event from 4 – 7 p.m., on January 15. Volunteers will help create and decorate meal packages that include all seven ingredients to make the soup. The packages will then be donated to Community Sharing to help combat food insecurity faced by local families.
