5 Reasons Your Child Should Have an Eye Exam Before They Start School

Guest Post By Anita Ginsburg

Whether your child is just starting school or is entering their senior year, it’s important to be prepared. One of the most important things to do prior to the first day is scheduling an eye exam. Often, children don’t even realize they’ve got a vision problem, and their parents aren’t aware of either. However, those subtle issues can make a major impact on your child’s school performance and confidence. Here are just a few of the reasons your child should have an eye exam before they start school.

Vision Problems Can Happen During Childhood

Eye problems are often associated with older adults. Many think that because children are still young, they will have very few health issues, especially with their eyesight. However, this isn’t always the case.

Vision problems in children happen more often than you may think. In some cases, children usually just have blurry vision, which makes it hard to see things up close or far away, depending on the issue. This can affect your child’s basic reading skills as they are left behind their peers. Alternately, it may mean that your child can’t read the board well enough to fully understand the lesson.

Your Child’s Curriculum Might be Digital

Although some schools like to stick to the classic textbook, many have gone digital or are moving in that direction. Due to this change, many children are going to be using computers and other digital devices to learn.

While this makes learning more convenient, your child’s eyes are being exposed to blue light. Blue light is a form of light that penetrates the retina of the eye. This greatly increases the risk of your child developing an eye problem. Make sure to get your child’s eyes checked every couple of years to watch for the development of any problems related to eye-strain.

Boosts Your Child’s Self-Esteem

If they don’t realize that it’s their eyes that are the problem rather than their intelligence, they may become very discouraged about their success at school. With the stress that comes with constantly leaving their seat to see the board, having eye issues can cause your child to feel bad about themselves. Seeing your child upset is the last thing you want to see.

Getting them an eye exam will help uncover the issue and action can be taken to rectify it. Whether they’re prescribed contact lenses or a pair of glasses, being able to see without any difficulty will greatly boost your child’s self-esteem.

Minimize Future Damage

Problems that aren’t caught early can develop further, and if they’re not caught, they may be irreversible without surgery or other therapies. This can cost extra money and may cause complications.

Comprehensive eye exams, offered by many optometrists like those at For Your Eyes Only, can uncover any problems that may be developing, and the doctor can work with you to find ways to combat or even reverse those problems in some cases. This is especially important if your family has a history of vision problems.

Set Your Child Up for Success

Finally, getting your child an eye exam will help them succeed in school. Since children learn from observation, maintaining their eyesight is a must. Children with untreated visual issues usually have lower grades than those without.

Your child’s success in school begins with preparation. What matters is that you’re aware of the issue before it negatively impacts your child. Getting your child an eye exam before starting school ensures that they’ll make the most of their time in school.

  1. I think you are absolutely right! I can remember my sister having a hard time in school because of eye issues and my daughter is a preemie which increases her chance of eye issues. Great post!!!
