4 Ways to Keep Children Healthy During Flu Season

When it comes to keeping your kids healthy during the flu season, it might feel as if you are fighting an uphill battle. While your kids are sure to get sick at least a few times over the years, there are some steps that you can take to help them avoid serious illnesses. Here are 4 ways to keep kids healthy during the flu season.


Emphasize Good Hygiene

Most medical experts agree that regularly washing your hands is one of the most effective ways to avoid the flu. In order to kill germs and other microorganisms, your children should use hot water and high-quality soap. They will also need to continue scrubbing for at least 20 or 30 seconds to completely eradicate all of the germs.

As a general rule, everyone in your family should wash their hands as soon as they get home from work, school, or running errands. This can be difficult to teach children, who often do not understand the benefits of hand-washing. Try to instill good washing habits and have a decent supply of hand sanitizer on hand.


Ensure a Healthy Diet

Sticking to a healthy diet will boost your child’s immune system, and that will lower their risk of becoming sick. While every child has slightly different nutritional needs, most younger kids are going to benefit from a diet that is filled with fresh produce, whole grains, and lean sources of protein. You should also limit your children’s intake of sugary foods, highly processed snacks, and refined carbohydrates. This will help keep their body strong and able to fight off disease and viruses.

Get Plenty of Rest

When a child doesn’t get enough sleep each night, you might notice a huge change in their physical and mental health. Over time, chronically under-sleeping is going to wreak havoc on their immune system and increase their risk of becoming sick. During growth spurts, your child might need as much as nine hours of sleep per night.

Properly Maintain Your Home

Keeping your home comfortable and germ-free is going to be another important step in this process. In addition to thoroughly cleaning your home as often as possible, you should also make sure that it is properly insulated. Poor insulation is going to overwork your HVAC system and let microscopic irritants into your home. If your child has flu-like symptoms for more than a week or two, then you should immediately schedule an appointment with their doctor. The flu usually disappears within a week, and they might have another type of illness if their symptoms haven’t diminished after a few days.
