1. Root for a Sports Team

Rooting for a sports team is an age-old tradition. It is a hobby that your son will carry forward for the entire family. Your son will learn about teamwork, and how to hustle. He will understand the importance of giving it your all, and your son will learn the valuable lesson of winning and losing.

If sports typically are not your thing, the types of sports out there for enjoyment have grown. Old school sports like basketball, baseball, football, and hockey can be enjoyed, of course. Golf, hiking, running, and tennis are great options for you, too. But you can also enjoy some more modern activities like cornhole and standup paddleboarding. No matter what, you two should be rooting for something.

2. Car Maintenance

Even basic car maintenance is something you and your son can enjoy together. From an early age, they can get in on the fun. If you know how to change the oil of a car start off by showing them all the basics. Even the youngest kid can help you apply oil change stickers on the windshield.

If he is wanting to learn more advanced car maintenance, you can always go to your local auto shop or watch online videos. You also could invite someone over to show them proper techniques.

3. Cooking Together

You will enjoy this, and your son’s future spouse will appreciate it. Learning to not only cook but put together nutritious meals is a skill that will benefit your son throughout life.

If you are not a cook yourself, then find someone to teach them how to cook. You just have to be in the kitchen or out by the grill showing interest and enthusiasm about their activity. Again, cooking is a skill that will indeed benefit your son, and quality time around food preparation is a fun, bonding experience.

4. Volunteer Together

There are all kinds of organizations that you and your son can help through volunteer service. Even the smallest communities have volunteer opportunities. If you are not sure where to turn, ask your local elected officials, business leaders, or religious leaders.

Volunteering will teach your kid the importance of giving back. He will learn the value of service, and your son can also list these experiences on his college and job applications. Find an effort your kid will support, and seek out opportunities they will enjoy.

5. Yard Work

If you are not experienced at yard work do not worry. You can start with tasks like weed pulling in beds, raking leaves, and picking up sticks and branches. Not only will your son learn the importance of yard upkeep, but they also can help you improve your property value. He can teach these important lessons to his own son in the future.

You might already know the yard upkeep basics, and it might be time to invest in some tools and machinery. You can go to your local small businesses, big box stores or shop online for these accessories.

Enjoy Your Time Together

The five aforementioned activities are sure to be a hit with your son. You will also be able to get to know them better, and you can teach them important life lessons. Enjoy hanging out with your son through any of these mentioned activities.
