When it comes to our cars, we can sometimes get into the habit of tricking ourselves. We tell ourselves that our vehicles are great, even when they are coming to the end of their lives.

Knowing when you need to buy a new car is an important family and lifestyle-related decision. After all, it’s one of the biggest financial choices you’ll make in your adult life.

Therefore, in this post, we take a look at some signs that it is time for a new car (and that buying a fresh one off the forecourt makes a lot of sense).

Your Mileage Is Terrible

If you find that you’re getting under twenty miles to the gallon, it might not just be the size of your engine. Instead, it could be a sign that your vehicle is breaking down and depreciating on the inside, making it less efficient.

Terrible mileage is a real problem for many car owners. Eventually, the engine just doesn’t work as efficiently as it used to. And that can lead to much bigger bills at the pump.

You’ve Done More Than 100,000 Miles

As a nation, we buy used cars with more than 100,000 miles on the clock. But that doesn’t mean that we should. Cars in this category – especially those with smaller engines – don’t usually have long to live. Yes, some vehicles will go another 100,000 miles, but these tend to be quite rare. The majority of cars are utterly spent by the time they get to around 120,000 miles, and repair costs go up dramatically.

There’s Rust Everywhere

Another telltale sign that it’s time to sell your car is rust under the skirts and hood. If you notice that your vehicle’s chassis is starting to crumble, it’s a sure sign that similar issues are plaguing the internal components too.

Your Lifestyle Has Changed

You may also need a new car if your lifestyle has changed. For instance, if you’re a new mom, driving about in a supermini just isn’t practical. You need a much larger SUV to transport the kids and get them from A to B.

You may also need a new car if you’ve moved to a new location. For instance, if you now live in the mountains whereas before, you lived in the city, then you may need a 4X4 to get around.

Your Car Is Unsafe

The safety features of modern vehicles are now so much better than they ever used to be. In fact, they are now so good that they make older cars look positively unsafe.

New safety features on cars include things like:

  • Drowsiness warnings
  • Automatic headlight dipping
  • Lane assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Predictive braking
  • Hazard warnings
  • Side airbags
  • Backing up cameras

You’re Spending All Your Money On Repairs

Lastly, if you find yourself spending all your money on repairs, that could be another reason to switch your current car for a new one. Eventually, the time comes when repairing your car just isn’t economical and it is destined for the scrap heap.
