Bringing a new baby home is one of the most exciting times in a parent’s life. But it can also be a little daunting, especially if you’re not prepared. One of the best things you can do to prepare for your new arrival is to make some renovations to your home. Check out five ideas below on the best ways to make your space baby-ready.

Install a Baby Gate

A baby gate is an absolute must. Although your newborn can’t walk themselves to the stairs just yet, they’ll be toddling in no time! Having a baby gate purchased in advance is a great way to be ready for all that your child’s first years will require.

However, in some cases, you don’t have to wait until they’re standing! If you have a dog, a baby gate is a good way to keep them out of an area. This is especially useful if you’ve set your baby down outside of their crib and you don’t want the dog to have access to an unattended child.

Add Childproof Locks to Cabinets and Drawers

As your child begins exploring their surroundings, they’re going to want to know what’s inside all of those cabinets and drawers. To prevent them from getting into things they shouldn’t, add childproof locks to any cabinets or drawers that contain potentially dangerous items. You can find childproof locks at most hardware stores or online.

Renovate a Room

Perhaps you have a room picked for the nursery but it feels small. Consider room additions that you can make to open the space to be functional for your child as they grow. There are professionals who can advise you on the best plan. It is important to not try anything too physically exerting while you are pregnant and allow experts to craft a beautiful room for your child.

Get a Crib That Meets Safety Standards

Your baby is going to spend a lot of time in their crib, so you want to make sure it’s safe. Look for a crib that meets current safety standards. Additionally, make sure the mattress is firm and fits snugly in the crib. You can find both new and used cribs at baby stores, online, or even at some thrift stores. Just make sure to do your research before making a purchase.

Install Window Guards and Safety Gates on Balconies and Decks

If you have any balconies or decks in your home, it’s important to make them as safe as possible for your little one. Install window guards on all of the windows and safety gates at the entrances to prevent your child from falling or climbing out. You can find both window guards and safety gates at most hardware stores.

Preparing your home for your baby doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. With a little bit of planning, you can make some simple renovations that will help keep your child safe and make your life easier as you embark on the journey of parenthood.
