“Three-week program comes as increasing evidence shows mature adults are remaining in the workforce and require updated skills to get the right job.”

Gesher Human Services, one of the largest human service agencies in metro Detroit, will be offering a three-week career reinvention program for metro Detroiters aged 45 and over, as increasing numbers of mature adults look to stay or rejoin the workforce instead of retiring.

A new book called In Control at 50+: How to Succeed in the New World of Work highlights

the shift for experienced workers to remain in employment, and the importance of ensuring skills are up-to-date.  Recharge! will be held at Gesher Human Services in Southfield (29699 Southfield Road) from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Wednesdays from May 8-24, and will offer participants the opportunity to reconnect with their skills and interests, refresh their resume, restore belief in themselves – particularly in the midst of life transitions – and re-energize the job search process. The program requires registration and there is a $40 material fee, although scholarships are available.

Sherrie James, a career counselor at Gesher Human Services

who runs Recharge! said that while there will be an emphasis on resume writing, modern employment search processes and networking using LinkedIn, she and her team will also focus on an individual’s values and strengths.

“Experienced workers have so much to offer employers in terms of expertise, reliability and even common sense,” said James. “We want to offer mid to upper career level workers in metro Detroit an opportunity to find a rewarding career that plays to their strengths and really reignites their professional passions.”

Participants will be offered career assessments to help them understand employment opportunities that could be available to them and will also be guided towards further resources if they require training.

“The biggest barrier we frequently see is a lack of adequate computer skills, but training is available and getting that piece of the puzzle in place, combined with a strong resume and a knowledge of how to find that perfect job, really can make your later working years rewarding both personally and financially,” said James.
