Divorce is a tough time in anyone’s life whether they expected the break up to happen or not. It’s something that like a wedding, it’s likely your first experience an experience that perhaps you never thought would happen when walking down the aisle.

Managing a divorce is something that takes a lot of strength, especially when it comes to keeping the peace with your partner – now ex-partner.

With that being said, here are some top tips for managing a divorce without falling out with your partner.

Manage each other’s expectations fairly.

What are your expectations when it comes to the divorce? What are the expectations for your partner? Both of you are likely going to want different things from the divorce and any settlements that are being discussed.

You may get lucky and the expectations are fairly similar or the same. Whatever the case may be, it’s important that you’re managing each other’s expectations fairly. Not every divorce is going to pan out in the way that most would hope it would. For some, sacrifices or agreements need to be made.

Try to be considerate of the partner’s needs, as well as you’re own of course.

Don’t take personal digs.

Personal digs are definitely not going to do you any favors and nor is it going to keep the peace between you and your partner. If anything, it’s only going to make things worse, which is why it’s important to take personal feelings out of the process.

While that can leave it feeling quite cold, it’s better to do this than to take cheap jabs at one another and cause more upset than is needed.

Give each other some space and set boundaries.

Make sure that when it comes to you and your partner, you’re setting some form of boundaries and space. It may be that your divorce is going very well in comparison to most, but that doesn’t mean you should be having dinners with your ex-partner or planning meet-ups with them.

During a divorce, it’s important to give one another some space and to set boundaries where it’s needed. In many situations, those boundaries are not always clearly defined, or respected so it’s important to set them.

Discuss your wants and needs with a family lawyer.

When you discover family law expertise with Peters & May, or a firm more local to you, you can clearly map out what needs you have when it comes to the divorce process and proceedings. Why? Well, even if you have a good relationship with your ex-partner, they may have a lawyer who is whispering in their ear.

It’s good to get in touch with someone like Applecross Family Lawyers to protect your own interests as an individual.

Try to remain civil throughout the process.

While it can be hard to do in some scenarios, remaining civil is definitely something to consider. Think about the respect for your partner, even if you have very little remaining. Keep things civil to get through the process as quickly and as painlessly as possible.

With these, you’ll find that you can minimize the fallout of the relationship with your partner during a divorce.
