Want to Spend More Time Outdoors? Here Are 7 Tips

We all know that we’re supposed to be spending regular time outdoors for our mental and physical health and to maintain those crucial vitamin D levels! However, in our busy office-bound lives, it’s not always easy to do so. 

Some habits in life need to be forced, and there are a few helpful tips that you can implement that will make your daily sunshine time a little bit easier and more appealing too.

Keep reading for our seven ideas that might get you out in the sun more often this summer.

1. Make the Space Inviting

First of all, make sure that your own outdoor space at home is a place where you’d like to spend your time. If you have a backyard or patio, you could enjoy your meals there and spend some of your after-work downtime outdoors instead of on the sofa. 

Before this can happen, you need to make sure that the space is comfortable and inviting. Start by investing in comfy furniture like outdoor chase lounges, sofas, or even hammocks to make your patio an inviting space. Make sure you keep the place clean and easily accessible too. 

2. Incorporate Nature into Your Daily Routine

We all have a daily routine that we follow out of sheer habit. If you can find a way to make the great outdoors a part of this routine, you’ll have guaranteed fresh air each and every day. 

For example, you could consider incorporating a morning outdoor walk into your routine before eating breakfast or getting ready for work. If this won’t work for you and your schedule, consider eating your lunch outside instead of at your desk or taking a 20-minute work break outside to walk around, read, or take a phone call. 

3. Try Outdoor Fitness

Regular exercise is one of the many habits you need to help keep your health in check, and we’re sure that you’re already exercising at least two or three times a week! A fun and simple change to make, then, is to simply move your workouts to an outdoor space.

Run in the streets instead of on the treadmill or put your yoga mat outside for your daily yoga practice or HIIT sessions. If you prefer to work out in the gym, consider swapping just one of those workouts for an outdoor walk or run, or consider joining a boot camp class that takes place outside. 

4. Schedule Outdoor Activities

We all need time off on the weekend to do something fun – explore someplace new, catch up with friends, or spend some quality time with our partners. Try to prioritize outdoor activities instead of your typical movie date or brunch with the girls.

Instead of these, you can plan group hikes, long romantic walks, play a sport together, or have a picnic in the park. These activities are a great opportunity for fun times with the people you love, mixed with the important habit of getting some fresh air and sunshine. 

5. Disconnect From Your Tech

With technology taking over our every waking moment, it’s important that we learn to unplug, especially when we’re outdoors. When you take the time and space to truly feel where you are and experience nature, you’ll realize the benefits and naturally start spending more time out there.

Be intentional about your time outdoors by leaving your phone behind. Take a walk without your device, and enjoy your lunch on a park bench with a book or just yourself for company. Ditch the social media and just be present. 

6. Embrace Seasonal Activities

To keep things interesting all year round and keep up your outdoor habit, take advantage of fun seasonal activities. 

In the summertime, take road trips down to the beach, enjoy picnics in the park, go swimming in your friends’ pools, and explore hiking trails that have gorgeous waterfalls and lakes to swim in. When the colder weather approaches, spend more time in pumpkin patches and gathering with your loved ones around a fire with a cup of hot cocoa. 

7. Learn a New Skill

This final tip is for those of us who thrive on a challenge – pick a new “outdoor skill” and master it. This can be anything from a new sport to gardening, depending on your interests and what might be available to you. 

Picking up a new hobby like playing tennis, growing a vegetable garden, surfing, or even bird watching will force you to spend more time outside in order to hone your craft and get better and better.
