In a quest to find nutritional options for kids at fast-food chains, Healthnews analyzed menus from 10 popular outlets to highlight the healthiest and least healthy choices. With input from nutrition scientist Lauryna Nelkine, this report aims to simplify fast-food decisions for parents, pointing towards healthier meal selections.

Research Method

The Healthnews team undertook extensive research on the websites of fast food chains to identify the calorie content of kids’ meals. They selected the option with the lowest calorie count from each brand for analysis. In collaboration with a nutrition scientist, the team has examined the nutritional composition and ingredients of each selected meal, using information obtained from the brands’ official online resources.

Summary

  • Wendy’s leads in low-calorie meals, offering a standout option at just 246 calories, while Burger King lags with options averaging 475 calories.
  • Sonic Drive-In, Quizno’s, and Popeyes top the list for high saturated fat content, with 5.5, 7.5, and 6 grams, nearing half the daily recommended limit.
  • Subway, Wendy’s, and KFC offer kids’ options with lower saturated fats—1.5, 2.9, and 2.5 grams—making them comparatively healthier.
  • Wendy’s records the highest sodium in its meal (1,005 mg), while Subway presents the lowest.

Despite lower calorie offerings from these chains, many items are sugary and fiber-poor, underscoring the need to prioritize nutritional value over mere calorie counts.
