Why Eating Well Is Important as a Mother

When you’re a mother, you’ve got lots of different roles to fill, from ultimate caregiver to one-stop problem-solver and much more besides. That’s why, amidst all that chaos and the fact that you’ll usually be found helping others, making time for yourself and ensuring you eat a healthy, nutritious meal three times a day can be hard, and sometimes it’s downright impossible.
The problem is that if you neglect your dietary needs and nutrition, it can have a seriously negative effect on your health and your ability to care for your family, and that’s not what you want at all – it’s the opposite, in fact. With that in mind, read on to find out why eating well is important as a mother so you can start to prioritize it more and reap the many benefits that come with it.
Setting An Example
Even if you’re not thinking of your own health and wellbeing, you do need to remember that you’re your child’s first – and probably most important – influencer and role model, and children definitely learn a lot by watching what their parents, guardians and other adults in their lives do and how they behave. That includes eating habits, good and bad.
By prioritizing nutritious foods in your own diet, you’re already setting a positive example for your children, helping them understand that eating regularly and healthily is a good thing to do (and those are the kinds of good habits that can last a lifetime and be passed on to their own children, if they have them). In other words, if they see you enjoying a variety of fruits and vegetables, they’re much more likely to do the same, which is exactly what you want.
Boosts Your Energy
Motherhood is demanding – by the end of the day, you’ll be exhausted, no matter how old your children might be. From chasing toddlers to doing chores to being there for after-school homework help, to working your own full-time job, is it any wonder you’re tired all the time?
Eating a healthy, well-balanced meal will help with this. If you can do that, you’ll boost your energy levels and give your body the tools it needs to feel more awake and ensure you’re more productive. So if you’ve been asking how soon does milk replenish after pumping and you’re feeling absolutely shattered, it could be that eating well will help you feel more awake and ensure you’ve got enough milk for your little one.
It’s Self-Care
As we’ve said, most of the time mothers put other people’s wellbeing ahead of their own, but that’s only going to lead to burnout and other sickness, and it’s never a good idea to do it one hundred percent of the time.
Even if you don’t have that much time, making sure you give yourself something tasty and healthy to eat is a fantastic form of self-care, and since you do have to eat every day (please don’t skip any meals!), it’s a great way to stay on top of being kind to yourself.
