Eastern Market Launches “Authentic Eastern Market” Campaign to Expand Impact Across Detroit and Beyond

Eastern Market,

a cornerstone of Detroit’s identity for more than 130 years, today launched the “Authentic Eastern Market” campaign, a $15.5 million fundraising initiative designed to protect the market’s legacy while driving forward its economic and cultural influence.

Built on four pillars, the campaign aims to strengthen the regional food economy, maintain racial equity by preserving affordable business spaces, maintain the district’s character, enhance the market’s infrastructure for vendors and visitors, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the organization. This effort will keep Eastern Market a beacon of opportunity for future generations.

“While our weekend markets are well-known, our mission extends far beyond a shopping destination,” said Katy Trudeau, President, Eastern Market. “Eastern Market is an anchor of Detroit’s economy, a platform for local entrepreneurs and a catalyst for regional food systems. The ‘Authentic Eastern Market’ campaign allows us to expand our reach, support small business owners and ensure the market’s legacy for generations to come.”

The campaign kicked off in shed 5,

with more than 60 supporters turning out to learn how Eastern Market seeks to showcase a larger story about its role in Michigan’s food economy and the future it envisions. The “Authentic Eastern Market” campaign will strengthen the market’s ability to support local businesses, enhance the visitor experience, create affordable space for entrepreneurs of color, and develop a more resilient food system across Michigan and the Midwest.

With new leadership combining fresh vision and the deep experience of long-time Eastern Market stewards, this campaign ushers in a new era of growth. From infrastructure projects and entrepreneur training programs to expanded food access programs, the funds raised will directly support regional economic resilience while preserving the rich heritage that has made Eastern Market iconic.

With the generous support of key donors including William Davidson Foundation,

Max & Marjorie Fisher Foundation, Hudson Webber Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, Sun Communities, Walters Family Foundation and Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, the “Authentic Eastern Market” campaign is set to drive transformational change for the neighborhood, Detroit and the region. Their contributions will ensure that Eastern Market continues to serve as a vital hub for Detroit’s cultural and economic growth.
