Spine Health Awareness Month: Metro Detroit Back Pain Experts Shares His Story & Unique Treatment

Local back expert Dr. Sol Cogan recently had his own experience with excruciating back pain on a trip to Chile with his son. Now, during October’s Spine Health Awareness Month, Cogan wants to share his story about his personal healing journey using a unique-to-Michigan back strengthening machine called SpineForce, as well as offering metro Detroiters the opportunity to benefit from the machine. Cogan’s 11-year-old son,

is a talented skier and wanted to take advantage of Chile’s winter season (our summer) to practice skiing, so Cogan was joining his son in extreme skiing:  careering around the slopes, jumping off cliffs and hiking up mountains at the end of August. Cogan neglected to keep up with his regular back exercises which had kept an old spine injury from his younger days as a wrestler at bay. Suddenly, he was in agony.

“I blew a disc in my back and knew I was in trouble, wondering how I would get home,” said Cogan, the founder of The Nerve and Disc Institute in Farmington who has spent the last two decades taking care of professional athletes including the Detroit Lions, and is currently the team chiropractor for the Detroit Tigers since 2016.

Cogan was prescribed heavy-duty pain-relieving drugs in Chile

for the herniated disc which barely helped his pain, so as soon as he got home to metro Detroit he went to his own clinic. He quickly began spinal disc repair treatment with his own proprietary therapy IntraDiscNutrosis® which uses the DiscLogix® machine to provide healing for repairs bulging, herniated and degenerative discs. The benefits of the treatment have been backed up by research in a peer-reviewed journal.

After a couple of weeks Cogan was feeling much better but realized that strengthening his spine was going to be paramount to avoiding a similar injury in the future. That is when he turned to SpineForce, a 2000-pound piece of equipment in his office from France which is the only one in Michigan and now located at his Farmington clinic. It improves coordination and strength of intrinsic muscles around the spine for long-term stability and injury prevention. The spinal rehabilitation machine only requires 10 to 15 minutes of push and pull strengthening exercises two or three times a week for up to 12 weeks.

Now, during Spine Health Awareness Month,

and through November, Cogan wants to offer metro Detroiters an opportunity to use the SpineForce machine at a special low cost. Normally an initial assessment and first session are $167 but now it is being offered for only $67.

“I spend my days treating people with back issues but until my recent experience I had truly forgotten how it feels to be in so much pain. It was a very humbling experience as it brought me to my knees,” said Cogan. “Assisting the disc to heal is the first step with IntraDiscNutrosis® and for many people that will be enough to keep them healthy if they do their exercises. But for people like me who are extremely active, and who want to strengthen their spine for added protection against injury, SpineForce can make all the difference.” Cogan is himself now using the SpineForce machine and describes himself as 95 percent better in just six weeks.
