Not everyone learns in the same way, even as adults. Sometimes people need to see things presented to them in a different way to fully understand what is going on. It can be tough to find out what works best for your child, but the only way to know is to put the effort in and work it out. It’s not just down to school to work this out for you, they’re your kids, and you need to do what you can to be involved in their education. Down below, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the different ways to teach a child, so keep reading down below if you would like to find out more.

Creative Choices

First, you can go for the more creative choices such as drawing, painting, paper mache, and so much more. A lot of kids find that learning through this kind of medium is massively beneficial as they will remember the experience of doing with their hands more than they would reading from a textbook. This works for kids of all ages, and doesn’t just stop being effective when they get to a certain point of their life.

Even now, we’re sure that you know some people who love to draw things out when they are thinking things through. Or maybe they do it in a more subtle way such as doing little doodles while they are going over things in their head. It may not be possible to teach them everything this way, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t when you can. Even teachers are starting to move towards more blended learning in the classroom than ever before, so maybe trying to approach things like this at home will be beneficial for your kids too.

Play Time

You might not understand how this works, but it’s actually quite common for a lot of kids to learn their best through play. When you were younger, we bet that you loved to play when you were at school or when you were supposed to be learning things, and that’s not changed as time has gone on. What you probably didn’t realize is that you were learning quite a lot when you were doing that. There are number games, word games, puzzles and so much more that you can use to help teach your kids. For example, when they are toddler age, most of what they learn is done through games and things that present as games.

The reason for this is because that’s what they engage with. They find the colors and the fact that they have to actually do something engaging, and it’s easier to remember things when this is the case. Of course, this doesn’t work for all children, but for the vast majority, play is always a good option.

Reading

Depending on the age of your child, they may read independently or with your help. Either way, they are picking up a lot of useful things when they do. Depending on the books they are reading, they can learn a lot about life, they can learn about handling their emotions, being kind to others and so much more. Books teach so many people of all ages so much, as there are often messages to take away once you have finished reading. Using books to demonstrate points is a fantastic way of using fiction to demonstrate real life skills and learning new things!

If they are able to read themselves, then they are also improving their literacy and reading skills at the same time. They are likely going to encounter new words, so it’s good to have an adult around to help them when they need it. As well as this, books are great because they take the kids to new worlds, helping them to develop their imagination as much as their real world skills and knowledge.

Watching Videos

Videos often get demonized for no reason. Yes, we agree that your child should not be watching TV 24/7, but let’s be real, who is doing that? Letting your kids watch videos on kids YouTube is absolutely fine, and it’s even better if they are learning videos. There are so many educational ones out there, and it’s worth every single second that you spend finding them. A lot of the time, you will find a lot of repetition and singing in these videos, as these are two of the most common ways that kids learn.

Letting your kids watch videos to help them learn and develop is fine, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. It’s quite common for kids to learn better from these videos than from their parents in some subjects, and there isn’t really anything wrong with that. We do want to add though that videos are not a substitute for parenting, you do still need to do your part!

Take It Outside

The final thing that we want to mention here is that you can take your kids outside to learn. You can use sticks and stones to help teach them math. You can play games with them in the park to help their counting and problem solving skills. Academics are not the only things that your kids need to learn, you know? It’s time we stopped pretending that they are, and also put the focus back on teaching them basic life skills.

Hopefully you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the different ways that you can teach your child things. It’s not just down to the school to ensure that your child understands what they are learning, and how to do basic things like be kind to people. It’s also down to you as the parent, and it’s time that you started taking this job a little bit more seriously, investing a little more time into it. Now you can see some of the ways that you can make this more enjoyable, so plan out some fun ideas.
