Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit Kicks Off “Furniture Flip Challenge,” Inviting Michigan DIYers to Reimagine and Refurbish Discarded Tables, Dressers, and Other Home Décor Items into Must-Have Masterpieces.

$10,000 in prizes to be awarded including grand prize presented by HGTV star Hilary Farr at “Furniture Flip Bash” fundraiser September 4.

PONTIAC, MI (May 13, 2025) – Flip it to win it! The Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit is calling all do-it-yourselfers, artists, woodworkers and creatives to stop by its Pontiac warehouse (333 North Perry Street) starting today through July 31, select an old table, chair, dresser, hutch, bedframe, or other item from its curated collection of discarded, landfill-bound home furnishings, and transform them into secondhand showstoppers for a great cause. The nonprofit’s “Furniture Flip Challenge” contest will culminate at a fun-filled “Furniture Flip Bash” fundraiser September 4 at The Village Club in Bloomfield Hills featuring special guest Hilary Farr, international interior designer and popular star of HGTV’s “Love It or List It” for 19 seasons. The upcycled furniture pieces will be auctioned to raise money to support the 57-year-old organization, which provides essential furniture and mattresses to families in need throughout Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb Counties.

“Furniture is so much more than comfort; it provides dignity, stability, and a fresh start,” said Diane Charles, President and CEO of the Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit. “Every castoff item flipped through this challenge directly supports our mission to furnish hope for families overcoming homelessness, domestic violence, or loss from disasters. Together, we’re turning items that would have gone to a landfill into lifelines for those rebuilding their lives.”

Participants in the “Furniture Flip Challenge”

must be at least 18 years of age, Michigan residents, pay an entry fee of $30 per furniture item (maximum of three), provide their own labor and materials, and return completed entries by August 31. Entrants whose pieces are selected as Most Artistic, Most Functional, Most Creative, and Most Transformed by a celebrity panel of judges will receive a $1,000 prize, as will the artist who receives the most People’s Choice votes at the “Furniture Flip Bash.” Farr will select the Best in Show $5,000 grand prize winner based on the artistry, functionality, creativity, craftsmanship, transformation, and overall design of the repurposed piece.

The Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit, the oldest furniture bank in North America, has provided furniture to more than 80,000 Michigan families. In 2024, 17,000 items were distributed valued at $960,000. For complete contest rules, logos, images, sponsorship opportunities, etc., click here.
