New Data Reveals Top 10 Cruise Lines That Actually Deliver on Value

  • Expedition Luxury (Polar) leads the rankings with an impressive Value-for-Money score of 73/100.
  • Premium Luxury (Small Ships) and Expedition Luxury rank second and third, scoring 73/100 and 71/100, respectively.
  • Budget Ships score only 47/100, indicating strong value despite more moderate pricing.

A new study has revealed Expedition Luxury (Polar) as the cruise line category offering the best value for money across the global cruise industry.

The research by luxury villa rental Cabo Villa Vegas Dave analyzed pricing, space ratios, crew-to-passenger ratios, and included amenities across major cruise line categories. It measured four main metrics: Affordability (scored out of 25 points), Space Ratio per Passenger (scored out of 25 points), Crew-to-Passenger Ratio (scored out of 25 points), and Included Amenities Value (scored out of 25 points). These metrics were totaled to rank the cruise lines from best value to least value on a 100-point scale.

Expedition Luxury (Polar) leads the rankings with a remarkable Value-for-Money score of 73/100. Despite its premium price point of $1,200 per day (scoring 0/25 on affordability), this category excels with a spacious 65 space ratio per passenger (scoring 23/25), an impressive 0.91 crew-to-passenger ratio (scoring 25/25), and unmatched included amenities valued at $400 per day (scoring 25/25).

Premium Luxury (Small Ships) ranks second with a Value-for-Money score of 73/100. With a more moderate price of $625 per day (scoring 13/25), this category offers the highest space ratio of 70 per passenger (scoring a perfect 25/25), a solid 0.71 crew-to-passenger ratio (scoring 20/25), and included amenities valued at $250 per day (scoring 16/25).

Expedition Luxury secures third place with a total score of 71/100. Priced at $1,000 per day (scoring 5/25), this category provides a generous 60 space ratio per passenger (scoring 21/25), an excellent 0.83 crew-to-passenger ratio (scoring 23/25), and substantial included amenities valued at $350 per day (scoring 22/25).

Looking at the study, a spokesperson from Cabo Villa Vegas Dave commented:

“The research reveals that while luxury expedition cruises command premium prices, they deliver exceptional value through superior space ratios, attentive service, and comprehensive included amenities.

“According to the study, cruise lines offering the best overall value aren’t necessarily the most affordable options. The highest-ranked categories excel by providing spacious accommodations, personalized service with high crew-to-passenger ratios, and substantial included amenities that enhance the overall experience.”

Premium Luxury earns a total score of 70/100. With a daily rate of $550 (scoring 15/25), excellent space ratio of 65 per passenger (scoring 23/25), good crew-to-passenger ratio of 0.67 (scoring 18/25), and included amenities valued at $225 per day (scoring 14/25), this category demonstrates strong overall value.

Ultra-Premium (Small Ships) ranks fifth with a total score of 69/100. Priced at $450 per day (scoring 17/25), this category offers a 60 space ratio per passenger (scoring 21/25), a crew-to-passenger ratio of 0.63 (scoring 17/25), and included amenities valued at $210 per day (scoring 13/25).

Sailing Ships (Luxury) ranks sixth with a total score of 68/100, followed by Premium Luxury (Large Ships), taking the seventh spot with 67/100. Expedition Premium ranks eighth with a total score of 67/100, while Sailing Ships takes the ninth spot with 65/100. Ultra-Premium rounds out the top ten with a sea-sational score of 65/100.
