“Memorial Day marks the start of the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer, a period when fatal crashes involving drivers, especially teenagers, rise significantly,” stated Steve M. Gursten, attorney and President of Michigan Auto Law.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reveal that the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day is particularly perilous for drivers. According to AAA, teen-driver related deaths throughout the nation during this time period account for nearly 50% of all teen driver-related fatalities for the entire year.
Gursten stated, “This increase in fatal crashes is driven by factors such as heavier traffic, more inexperienced teen drivers, late-night driving, summer vacation traveling, construction, and impaired driving due to alcohol or drugs.” “Distracted driving is a critical contributor as well,” continued Gursten, “with drivers engaging in behaviors like texting, watching videos, using social media, and interacting with passengers while behind the wheel.”
Michigan Auto Law attorneys are strong advocates for making Michigan roads safer for motorists, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and for providing vital safety guidance to drivers throughout the state. The #SafeDriveSummer Pledge campaign is one of many efforts that Michigan Auto Law activates to improve the safety for everyone on Michigan roads.
