Library to Honor Original St. Bart’s Librarian, Caroline Reale to Open May 30 in Queens!

St. Bartholomew Catholic Academy is transforming a classroom into a library space that supports literacy, social-emotional learning, and above all, fosters a love of reading among its students. The new library, which will be named the Caroline M. Reale Memorial Library after the school’s original librarian, will open May 30 at the school located in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens.

“At St. Bartholomew’s, our school library is designed to inspire a lifelong love of reading, nurture critical thinking, and support the social-emotional development of every student,” says Grettel Dominguez, principal of St. Bartholomew Catholic Academy.” More than just a place for books, our library will be a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space that promotes emotional well-being and literacy for all learners.”

The library is being named in honor of the late Caroline M. Reale,

the school’s first librarian, who opened the original St. Bartholomew’s library in 1968 and served as librarian for 22 years, retiring in 1990.  Her daughter, Donna Reale, serves on the board of St. Bartholomew Catholic Academy.

The new library will feature cozy reading nooks, calm-down areas, and visual tools to help students regulate their emotions and take mindful breaks when needed. “It will be a place where every student will feel seen, heard, and valued,” Dominiguez says.

In collaboration with teachers, counselors, families, and the Elmhurst community, the library is designed to foster a shared culture of care, connection, and growth.

“With more than 60 percent of its students qualifying for Title I literacy support, this initiative is a vital step toward cultivating a genuine love of reading and empowering all students to thrive,” Dominguez adds.

The library is currently accepting book donations, with options for both drop-off and pickup.
