Michigan Residents Spend $485 Per Person on Lottery Tickets, Ranking Ninth in U.S

A new study by Chicksx has identified the states where Americans spend the most and least on lottery tickets, revealing significant regional differences in lottery participation across the country.

In 2023, Americans spent an average of $347.70 each on lottery tickets, bringing total lottery sales across the country to $113.3 billion. That’s a 5% jump from the $107.9 billion spent in 2022.

The statistics show that Rhode Island collected over $1 billion in lottery sales in 2023, with residents spending an average of $923.30 per capita – 165% more than the national average. This is the highest in the nation. The state’s lottery revenue increased 8.7% compared to 2022, generating $434.6 million in transfers to beneficiaries.

Massachusetts ranks second with residents spending $858.20 per person on lottery tickets annually (147% more than the national average). The Bay State generated $6.12 billion in total lottery sales, an increase of 4.6% from the previous year. Massachusetts returned the highest amount in prizes at $4.48 billion.

Maryland takes third place with $831.90 per capita in lottery spending – 140% above the national average. The state experienced a substantial 11.2% increase from 2022, bringing total sales to $5.21 billion with $1.49 billion transferred to beneficiaries.

West Virginia residents spend $814.10 per person on lottery tickets (134% more than the national average), placing the state fourth overall. With a population of just 1.77 million, West Virginia generated $1.44 billion in lottery sales in 2023.

Delaware completes the top five with per capita spending of $721.20 – 107% above the national average. The state collected $758.6 million in total lottery revenue with a modest 3% growth from the previous year.

Places six through ten are populated by New York at $530.80 lottery spending per capita (53% more than the national average), Georgia at $508 (46%), Ohio at $489.70 (41%), Michigan at $485.50 (40%), and South Dakota with per capita lottery spending of $448.40 (29%).

On the other hand, North Dakota has the lowest per capita lottery spending at just $49.40 – 86% less than the national average. The state generated only $39.3 million in total lottery sales despite showing strong growth of 34.8% from 2022.

Other states among the ones spending the least on lottery tickets are Wyoming at $75.30 lottery spending per capita (78% below the national average), New Mexico at $79.10 (77%), Montana at $85.20 (75%), and Oklahoma at $92.70 (73%).

The Northeast has established lottery markets with high per capita spending, while Western states are showing rapid growth from a lower base. This regional variation gives us valuable insights into financial behaviors and risk attitudes across different parts of the country.”

Methodology: This study uses data from NASPL Insights Magazine Index November/December 2023 to rank U.S. states based on their per capita lottery sales. There is not data available for Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah.
