The study shows that Michigan has the seventh-worst decline in daily attendance in the U.S.
The research conducted by an online HR platform, Techr analyzed average daily attendance for three years (2019 to 2021) from Common Core Data (America’s Public Schools). The average decline in attendance was calculated to identify the top U.S. states where school attendance is dropping.
Michigan ranks seventh,
averaging 58,930 over three years. Between 2019 and 2021, daily attendance in the Great Lake State witnessed the highest average of 1,361,496 in 2019 and its lowest in 2021 (1,302,566).
Looking at the study, a spokesperson at Techr commented:
“The study shows that Michigan has the seventh highest decline in daily school attendance among all U.S. states.
“The significant decline in daily attendance among students can be attributed to a combination of factors. Key drivers include mental health challenges, bullying, logistical barriers such as transportation issues, and a lack of motivation or relevance in academic content.
“State leaders and policymakers must adopt a multifaceted approach to reduce the decline in attendance. Strategies could include implementing early warning systems to identify at-risk students, developing individualized attendance plans that address specific barriers, and promoting supportive school environments that foster engagement.”
