Study Reveals U.S. States Most Obsessed with Shopping Deals During Summer and Back-to-School Season – Michigan Ranks 22nd
- New Yorkers are the most obsessed with shopping discounts in America, searching for deals 40% more often than the national average.
- Northeastern states show the highest interest in bargain hunting, accounting for eight of the top 10 spots.
- Wyoming places last, with its residents searching for online deals 36% less than the average American.
As summer sales ramp up and families prepare for back-to-school shopping, a new study shows that Americans’ enthusiasm for hunting down online discounts varies widely depending on where they live. While bargain-hunting is a common pastime, the research reveals that some states are far more devoted to finding deals than others.
The research, conducted by experts at ecommerce customer support software eDesk, analyzed Google search data to identify the U.S. states with the highest proportion of residents searching for bargains, discounts, and special offers.
Michigan’s findings:
Michigan ranks 22nd, with residents making 326,457 monthly searches for deals – 3,219 per 100,000 people, around 8.6% below the national average.
While neighboring Illinois (3,932) shows a stronger appetite for bargains, Michigan’s mix of big-city shoppers in Detroit and suburban or rural consumers may balance out its overall numbers, keeping the state in the middle of the pack.

The Garden State shows 26% higher interest in finding deals compared to the national average, with 422,758 monthly searches. New Jersey’s proximity to major retail centers and relatively high-income levels may contribute to residents’ bargain-hunting behavior.

Delaware ranks eighth, with 4,036 average monthly searches per 100,000 residents, roughly 14.5% above the national average. The First State generates 42,450 average monthly searches, a notable figure considering its small population and tax-free shopping status that already attracts bargain hunters from neighboring states.
Illinois places ninth, with 3,932 average monthly searches per 100,000 people, about 11.6% above the national average. The Prairie State residents search for deals an average of 499,756 times a month, with much of this activity likely concentrated in the Chicago metropolitan area, where high living costs drive residents to seek savings.
California rounds out the top ten with 3,926 average monthly searches per 100,000 residents, approximately 11.4% above the national average. With the largest population in the country, Californians’ 1.54 million average monthly searches for deals could mean that the high cost of living makes bargain-hunting essential.
