Detroit Ranks 15th Among Nation’s Most TikTok Viral Cities

• Detroit is the 15th most popular U.S. city on TikTok, generating over 21.8 billion views across 1.9 million posts.
• On average, TikTok posts featuring hashtags relating to Detroit accumulate 11,271 views.
• Of the 50 most populated cities in the U.S., Colorado Springs proves to be the least popular on TikTok, accumulating 1.2 billion views across its largest hashtags.

Detroit is the 15th most popular U.S. city on TikTok, according to a brand new study.

The study, conducted by student travel company Rustic Pathways, analyzed TikTok data for the 50 most populated U.S. cities to determine which destinations are capturing the most attention on the platform.

The two most common hashtags for each city were gathered, like “#nyc” and “#newyork,” and views of videos with these tags were totaled to reveal the hottest cities on TikTok.

Detroit findings

Detroit generates over 21.8 billion views on TikTok, placing 15th. Users on the platform have shared more than 1.9 million posts under the two most popular hashtags related to Detroit. Known as the “Motor City,” Detroit’s legacy in automobile innovation, Motown music, and its cultural resurgence all contribute to its strong social media presence.

Top 5 cities

According to the findings, New York City content is the most viewed, with 419.7 billion recorded views across related hashtags – in fact, this view count is 85% higher than that of the second-ranked city. The city also ranks first in total TikTok posts with 26 million posts across the measured hashtags. Home to many world-famous tourist attractions, like the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty, and with a large population of over eight million people, NYC cements its place at the summit of the ranking.

Los Angeles also ranks second among the commonly viewed cities with 226.1 billion views. While the West Coast city’s large population certainly helps its popularity on TikTok, its position as the entertainment capital of the world and hub for some of the world’s most famous influencers helps foster its strong reputation on social media.

Miamiis America’s third most popular city on TikTok, totaling 157.3 billion views. However, Miami averages more views per post than Los Angeles, at 15,256 compared to 11,780. The Floridian city attracts a lot of tourists through its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife.

Las Vegas is the only other western spot to feature in the top five, placing fourth. Of the 6.9 million TikTok videos studied, the city has gained over 96.8 billion views. Las Vegas is a popular spot on social media due to its world-famous Las Vegas Strip, casinos, entertainment, and esteemed restaurants.

Chicago rounds out the five most popular U.S. cities on TikTok. The Windy City has gathered over 92.1 billion views on the platform across 8.2 million posts. Known for its cultured arts and food scene, as well asiconic sports stadiums like Wrigley Field, the city generates a lot of buzz online.

Some U.S. cities don’t appear to have the same TikTok popularity, with Colorado Springs ranking as the least viewed city with only 1.2 billion views. TikTok views for Colorado Springs are 99% lower than New York City, likely due to lower tourist numbers and the city’s lesser-known status as a travel destination.

The statistics show that New York City collected 419.7 billion views on TikTok and the total views for the top five cities are nearly 1 trillion, showing a concentration of attention in major tourist destinations. In fact, the top four cities generated more views on TikTok than the other 46 combined (899.9 billion to 788.3 billion).

Shayne Fitz-Coy, CEO at Rustic Pathways, commented on the findings: “These findings highlight the significant influence social media now has on travel destination choices. The cities generating billions of views on TikTok are benefiting from organic, user-generated content that showcases their unique appeal to potential visitors.

“What’s particularly interesting is how these TikTok view counts don’t always correlate with population size. Cities like Miami and Las Vegas are punching well above their weight in terms of social media presence, indicating their strong appeal as travel destinations.”

• For each city, the two most relevant hashtags were established; each hashtag’s view counts were then scraped and used for the city ranking.
• Only one hashtag was used for Washington, D.C., as #dc was too heavily skewed towards the comic/entertainment company rather than the U.S. capital.
