Press Conference Reveals Multiple Victims Citing The Most Horrific Allegations Yet!
Farmington Hills, MI – October 2025 – During a press conference this week at Michigan Auto Law Headquarters, attorneys from Michigan Sexual Assault Lawyers, a division of Michigan Auto Law, announced multiple new lawsuits alleging horrific sexual assaults, medical misconduct, and patient abuse by Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, a nurse formerly associated with VHS of Michigan, Inc., Tenet Healthcare, Inc., and VHS Sinai-Grace Hospital, Inc.
The legal team, led by Tim Holland,
Lead Counsel for Michigan Sexual Assault Lawyers, revealed that multiple victims have now come forward with claims detailing shocking abuse that took place while they were under the medical care of Figueroa-Berrios at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit.
“These are among the most disturbing allegations we’ve encountered,” said Holland during the press conference. “Our clients trusted a medical professional and a major hospital system with their safety and wellbeing, and instead endured trauma that will affect them for life.”
Trejah Shines, a respected health care worker in the Michigan healthcare community, has bravely come forward with harrowing allegations against Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios. On July 26, 2025, Ms. Shines visited the emergency department of Sinai Grace Hospital seeking treatment for ovarian cysts. She thought she was going to receive medical care and instead was sexually assaulted by a defendant employed by Sinai Grace Hospital as a registered nurse. According to the complaint, Defendant Figueroa-Berrios, under the pretense of performing a second pap smear after one had already been completed by a female physician, sexually assaulted Ms. Shines. Following the assault, he allegedly administered a drug that caused her to lose consciousness, during which time he again assaulted her and subjected her to further physical and sexual abuse. Ms. Shines may have been left alone with Figueroa-Berrios for over an hour during this ordeal. A rape kit later tested positive, corroborating her account and confirmed by police testing. While the firm has cooperated fully with law enforcement, they cannot comment further on the ongoing investigation. The assault and its aftermath have been devastating for Trejah and her family, both personally and professionally.
Defendants Tenet Healthcare, VHS of Michigan,
and VHS Sinai-Grace Hospital are accused of knowingly hiring Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios despite a documented history of misconduct. Before his employment at Sinai-Grace, Figueroa-Berrios had been terminated from another hospital following multiple complaints of sexual misconduct, arrested for assault in 2019, and had posted inappropriate, sexually suggestive content on social media. These red flags were known, or should have been known, by the hospital defendants, who nevertheless placed him in a position of trust with access to vulnerable patients. As a result, Figueroa-Berrios allegedly exploited this position to sexually assault and abuse multiple patients, including the plaintiff, while under the hospital’s supervision.
A second lawsuit representing another alleged victim will be filed by Michigan Sexual Assault Lawyers and disclosed at a later date.
Holland emphasized that these new plaintiffs add to a growing number of individuals alleging abuse by Figueroa-Berrios, pointing to a pattern of institutional negligence that allowed these assaults to continue unchecked.
The conference was hosted by Tim Holland, Lead Counsel for Michigan Sexual Assault Lawyers,
with attorneys Steve Gursten and Laura Skenderas, and consultant Nora Hanna, also in attendance. Together, they outlined the scope of the new filings and the next steps in the ongoing litigation. The attorneys urged any other potential victims to contact Michigan Sexual Assault Lawyers confidentially.
“This is about accountability, not just for one perpetrator, but for the institutions that failed to protect vulnerable patients,” Holland stated. “We will not stop until every survivor has a voice.”
