Why Gen Z Would Rather Build a Side Hustle Than Wait for a Promotion

Why Gen Z Would Rather Build a Side Hustle Than Wait for a Promotion

As younger workers redefine what success looks like, a new national study from Patriot Software reveals why Gen Z is choosing side hustles over promotions.

Patriot Software study finds 51% of Gen Z side hustlers say their gig makes them feel hopeful about the future.

For many Gen Z workers, climbing the corporate ladder is losing its appeal. Instead, they’re building their own rungs.

A new nationwide study from Patriot Software reveals that 51% of Gen Z side hustlers say their gig makes them feel more hopeful about their future, showing that side hustles have become this generation’s answer to stalled promotions, wage stagnation, and economic uncertainty.

According to the survey, younger workers are trading traditional career patience for proactive independence—using side hustles as a way to build skills, income, and purpose outside the confines of 9-to-5 life.

“Gen Z isn’t waiting for opportunities because they’re creating them,” says Rachel Blakely-Gray, small business expert at Patriot Software.

“They see side hustles as a way to gain control over their income, creativity, and time. For this generation, financial security and self-fulfillment come from building, not waiting.”

Hope in the Hustle

Patriot’s study highlights a sharp generational divide:

  • 51% of Gen Z side hustlers say their gig makes them feel hopeful about their future.

  • 49% feel motivated, and 34% feel empowered by their work outside of traditional jobs.

  • Nearly 1 in 5 Gen Z hustlers (19%) started their side hustle to pursue a passion or hobby—not just to pay bills.

These findings suggest that while economic pressures have intensified, Gen Z is rewriting the career script and prioritizing autonomy, creativity, and skill-building over linear advancement.

From Corporate Climb to Creative Control

For older generations, side hustles were often a backup plan. For Gen Z, they’re part of the main plan. Instead of waiting years for a raise or title change, young professionals are investing in projects they own and control, from online reselling and freelance design to content creation and small-scale e-commerce ventures.

“The workplace used to promise stability,” Blakely-Gray adds. “Now, young workers see stability as something they create for themselves. The side hustle is both a financial tool and a career strategy.”

A Shift in Career Values

This growing independence may redefine the future of work. With 55% of Americans already engaged in side hustles, the traditional one-employer model is giving way to portfolio careers where multiple income streams replace a single paycheck.

For employers, that means adapting to a workforce that values flexibility, learning opportunities, and creative freedom as much as pay. For Gen Z, it means the hustle isn’t just a job on the side, it’s the start of something bigger.

Methodology

Patriot Software surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults who currently have or previously had a side hustle. Participants shared their motivations, goals, and financial reliance on side hustles, with responses analyzed by generation.
