We all worry about our elderly relatives, especially as they start to develop health conditions and we can see them getting noticeably frailer, but when we lead such busy lives working and looking after children of our own, it can be tough to work out how we can help them and keep them safe while still living our own lives too, right?
It’s really tough, but below you will find some things that can help you to help keep them safe and give you the peace of mind you need, even when you can’t be there in person.
Check in on them
The most important thing you can do to keep elderly relatives safe is to check in on them regularly. By doing so, not only do you show them you care and ensure that they have company, but you can also keep a close eye on how well they are doing and any issues that may be arising that you need to monitor or sort out to keep them safe, such as illnesses, memory loss, and that kind of thing.
Install home monitoring devices
Technology is a wonderful thing, and these days you can buy all kinds of monitors and alarm systems that will alert you and the emergency services if your elderly loved one is in trouble. Fall alarms, for example. Will alert the medics if someone falls over and get them help as soon as possible. Then, there are panic alarms and heart monitors and things like that, which will let you know if there is a problem. Use them.
Make their home safe
There are lots of potential hazards in the average home, which will not usually be a big deal for the average adult, but for people with disabilities or those of us who are older and frailer, could cause serious issues. For example, rugs could cause falls, which are more serious for older people, or steps and stairs could be hard to navigate, leading to injury. Installing ramps, securing or removing rugs, and installing grab bars in showers and other spaces where falling is a possibility are simple and smart ways to keep seniors safe.
Consider a retirement community
For many older people, the safest place they can be is in a retirement community or assisted living facility, where there will be professionals around who can keep an eye on them when they can’t and offer them services like physical therapy on site. Not only do they keep older people safe, but the average retirement community is also a great thing for their social life, allowing them to live around like-minded people of a similar age, building communities, and ensuring they are never alone.
It’s hard to see the people you love getting older and frailer, and even harder when you don’t know how you’re going to keep them safe, but as you can see, help is at hand, and there are lots of things you can do to help, even if you aren’t always around.
