AI search analytics platform Peec AI has determined the states that offer the highest salaries for those in STEM careers. 76 STEM-related occupations’ salaries were analyzed and collected on Glassdoor to rank the states that provide the highest salaries for those in STEM fields.
Michigan Findings
Michigan ranks twenty-first among the top-paying states for STEM careers, with an average salary of $100,752 a year. The highest-paying STEM career in the state is an anesthesiologist, earning $357,399 annually. Other top-paying STEM careers include orthopedic surgeons at $315,647, ophthalmologists at $270,557, dentists at $225,427, and psychiatrists at $224,084.
The lowest-paying STEM career is a medical and clinical laboratory technician, earning $51,784. The average STEM salary in Michigan is slightly below the national average of $102,116.
Top Five States
In California, STEM professionals earn an average of $152,761 a year. The highest-paying roles are in the medical field, with anesthesiologists earning around $410,091 per year and orthopedic surgeons making about $360,754 annually.
Other high-paying STEM jobs include cardiologists and software engineers, though they fall slightly below these top earners. Emergency medical technicians earn the least among STEM occupations in the state, with an average annual salary of $62,276. The average STEM salary in California exceeds the national average of $102,116 by 49.6%.
Washington takes second place nationally, offering STEM workers an average annual salary of $148,550. In Washington, orthopedic surgeons top the STEM salary chart at $454,145 per year, followed closely by anesthesiologists at $415,954. At the lower end, emergency medical technicians earn the least, averaging $63,236 annually.
New York ranks third for STEM pay, where professionals earn an average of $135,380 per year. STEM careers in New York are led by orthopedic surgeons at $435,663 and anesthesiologists at $422,467, while recreational therapists earn the lowest salary of $62,039.
STEM employees in Maryland earn around $125,771 on average. The highest-paying STEM career is an orthopedic surgeon, earning $414,696 per year, followed by an anesthesiologist at $399,699. The lowest-paying STEM career is a medical and clinical laboratory technician, earning $36,761.
Colorado ranks fifth for STEM career pay, with an average salary of $124,865. In Colorado, the highest-paying STEM career is an orthopedic surgeon, earning $510,801 per year, followed by an anesthesiologist at $439,626. The lowest-paying STEM career is a medical and clinical laboratory technician, earning $55,073.

Methodology:
This study analyzed job advertisements for 76 STEM-related occupations listed on Glassdoor to identify which U.S. states offer the highest average pay for these roles. To rank the states, the study calculates a weighted average of the midpoint salary (the average of the lower and upper bounds of the salary range) for all relevant jobs within each state. The weighting is based on the number of job listings per occupation, ensuring that more prevalent occupations have a proportionally greater influence on the state’s average.
