Every year, the festive season brings joy, celebration, and an avalanche of sales promising unbeatable deals. But while Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Christmas promotions seem like the perfect opportunity to save money, shoppers often find themselves spending far more than intended.

Retailers know exactly how to trigger emotional, impulsive purchases, from countdown timers creating false urgency to “limited stock” warnings that push people to buy now and think later.

The result? Baskets filled with items you didn’t plan to buy and January credit card bills that wipe out any savings you thought you’d made.

Melissa Cid, Consumer Savings Expert at MySavings, a deal-focused platform helping shoppers since 2003, understands these tactics all too well. “Retailers spend millions researching how to make you spend more. The good news is that once you recognise these tricks, you can shop smarter and actually save money during the sales,” she explains.

Below, Melissa shares five proven strategies to help you stay in control and buy only what you genuinely need this festive season.

5 Ways To Beat Impulse Buying During Festive Sales

  1. Create A Strict Wishlist Before You Start Shopping

Before the sales even begin, sit down and write out exactly what you need to buy. Be specific: not just “clothes” but “black work trousers, size 12” or “wireless headphones under £50”. This list becomes your shopping boundary.

“The wishlist acts as your financial shield,” says Melissa. “If it’s not on the list, it doesn’t go in the basket. No exceptions, no matter how good the deal looks.”

When you’re browsing online or walking through shops, refer back to your list constantly. Retailers design their stores and websites to distract you with products you hadn’t considered. Your wishlist keeps you focused on what you actually came for.

  1. Use The Five-Hour Rule For Online Shopping

When something catches your eye online, don’t click “buy now” immediately. Instead, add it to your basket and walk away for at least five hours. This cooling-off period gives your brain time to move past the initial emotional excitement and evaluate whether you truly need the item.

“The five-hour rule is particularly effective during flash sales when retailers use countdown timers to create panic,” Melissa explains. “Most ‘limited time’ offers come back around, and if they don’t, you probably didn’t need the item anyway.”

Set a reminder on your phone to revisit your basket later. You’ll be surprised how many items suddenly seem less appealing once the initial rush wears off.

  1. Check The True Price History Before Buying

That “50% off” sticker might not be the bargain it appears. It’s a widespread practice for retailers to inflate prices before sales events, then slash them back to normal levels while claiming huge discounts. Before celebrating a deal, check what the item usually costs.

Compare prices across multiple websites to see if the discount is genuine. Look at the product on different retailers’ sites. If everyone’s selling it for roughly the same “sale” price, that’s probably its normal value.

“Price checking takes two minutes but can save you from fake discounts,” says Melissa. “If a deal seems too good to be true, it often is.”

  1. Set A Hard Spending Cap And Stick To It

Decide your absolute maximum spend before you start shopping, and treat that number as non-negotiable. Write it down, set it as your budget in banking apps, or even withdraw that exact amount in cash if you’re shopping in person.

The key is no top-ups and no exceptions. Once you hit your limit, you stop shopping, even if you spot another “unmissable” deal.

Melissa advises: “Your spending cap should be realistic but firm. Factor in gifts, essentials, and maybe one treat for yourself. But once it’s gone, it’s gone. This single rule will save you more money than any discount code.”

  1. Remove Tap-And-Pay And One-Click Payment Options

Make spending slightly more difficult by adding friction to the payment process. Remove your saved card details from shopping websites, disable one-click purchasing on Amazon, and take your contactless card out of your phone’s wallet when heading to the shops.

“It sounds small, but having to enter your card details manually or type in your PIN gives your brain a crucial moment to reconsider,” explains Melissa. “That five-second pause can be the difference between a considered purchase and an impulse buy you’ll regret.”

This small inconvenience acts as a final checkpoint before money leaves your account, giving you one last chance to ask yourself: do I really need this?

Melissa Cid, Consumer Savings Expert at MySavings, commented:

“Beyond these five strategies, there are additional steps you can take to protect yourself from overspending. Temporarily unsubscribe from promotional emails during the sales period. If you’re not seeing the deals, you won’t be tempted by them. Shop mid-week rather than on peak sale days when the frenzy is at its height, and you’re more likely to make rushed decisions.

“Remember, the best method of saving is to avoid spending money on things you don’t need in the first place. A 70% discount on something you wouldn’t normally buy is still money wasted. Shop with intention, not emotion, and you’ll finish the festive season with money still in your account.”
