Even in this day and age, people can feel unsure about shopping online with new companies, and with the number of scams and fake websites around now, that’s completely understandable. When you can’t actually see the product you want to buy in person, and literally anyone could be sitting behind a screen, a lot of people would rather buy from a business they already recognize or have ordered from before. This can obviously be difficult if you’re a new company. You might be genuine and selling exactly what you say you are, but customers don’t know that yet. You have to find ways to build trust and reassure people that it’s safe to place that first order with you. Once they’ve ordered once and everything arrives as expected it usually becomes much easier, but getting them to take that first step can be the hardest part.

Invest in a Good Website/ App

Your website or app will often be the first thing potential customers see, so it needs to give the right impression. Because of this, putting money into a well-designed website or app should be a priority when you’re setting things up. Anything that looks rushed or unprofessional can make people suspicious and question whether the business is genuine. Customers generally recognize that a company which looks polished and put together has invested time and money into it, which isn’t something scam sites usually bother doing.

Offer Paypal

Paypal provides a lot of protection for both sides of a transaction, which is why so many people feel comfortable using it. If something turns out not to be as described or is fraudulent, PayPal can step in and refund the buyer, which offers reassurance. For someone unsure about ordering from a business they haven’t heard of before, seeing PayPal as an option can be enough to convince them to go ahead. If you’re a brand-new company with no reputation yet, asking people to hand over card details straight away can easily put them off. If something more serious ever crops up, having a good fraud solicitor you can speak to is another thing that shows you’re running things properly.

Run Social Media Accounts Correctly

If customers are unsure about whether a company is legitimate, one of the first things they’ll often check is social media. When accounts are managed properly, with questions answered politely and reasonably quickly, it helps show that there are real people behind the business. On the other hand, lots of complaints or ignored messages can be a red flag. As a business grows, running social media can easily become a full-time job in itself, so bringing someone in to handle it may be necessary. Buying followers should always be avoided as it’s usually obvious and is something many fake businesses do. Instead, encourage genuine followers by offering incentives like discounts or voucher codes. A solid following helps show that real customers are buying and enjoying what you sell. Sharing positive feedback, reviews and customer photos (with permission) can also go a long way in building trust.
