  • Wayne County leads Michigan with 18 cyclist fatalities from 2021 to 2023, double the next most dangerous county

  • 67% of cyclist deaths statewide occur at night, with Wayne seeing 12 nighttime fatalities compared to 6 during the daytime.

  • Macomb and Kent counties rank second and third with 9 and 6 deaths, respectively

A new study by Uplift Legal Funding reveals that Wayne County is the most dangerous location for cyclists in Michigan, with 18 total fatalities recorded between 2021 and 2023. This represents double the number of deaths as the second most dangerous county.

The analysis of NHTSA data shows that the Detroit metropolitan area contains the most hazardous areas for cyclists in Michigan. Wayne County ranks first with 18 fatalities, followed by Macomb County with 9 fatalities.

Kent County ranks third with 6 fatalities, Oakland County ranks fourth with 5 fatalities, and Genesee County completes the top five with 4 fatalities.

The study reveals that most cyclist deaths occur during nighttime hours, with 67% of all fatalities happening after dark. In Wayne County, 12 of the 18 total deaths occurred at night, suggesting reduced visibility plays a significant role in cycling accidents.

Macomb County demonstrated a similar proportion of nighttime fatalities, with 5 of its 9 deaths occurring after dark. Kent County recorded 3 nighttime deaths compared to 3 during daylight hours.

Among the counties with the highest number of fatalities, Oakland County showed a pattern with 3 nighttime deaths compared to 2 during the daytime.

The Genesee region also faces considerable dangers, with Genesee County recording 4 cyclist deaths over the three-year period, with 3 occurring during daytime and 1 at night.

Jared Stern, Founder of Uplift Legal Funding commented on the findings:

“Understanding where and when these fatalities occur is crucial for implementing effective safety measures. Nighttime cycling clearly presents heightened risks that must be addressed through better infrastructure, lighting, and driver awareness programs. The concentration of fatalities in specific counties suggests systematic safety issues that need immediate attention.

“Targeted improvements in high-risk counties could significantly reduce cyclist fatalities throughout Michigan. Potential interventions include better street lighting, expanded dedicated bike lanes, and increased public awareness campaigns focused on sharing the road safely.

“What’s particularly concerning is the distribution pattern we’re seeing. Major urban centers experience the highest number of fatalities, but the proportion of nighttime deaths suggests that visibility is a critical factor regardless of location. Simple measures like improved lighting along bike routes and enhanced reflective requirements could save many lives.”

Methodology:

The NHTSA database was queried to find the total number of pedalcyclists killed in fatal crashes from 2021-2023. Each state had its counties ranked according to the total number of fatalities.
