As families begin to plan their spring and early summer vacations, check out this recent travel inflation data study that highlighted Detroit.
In the study, researchers calculate what it now costs to take a four-night domestic trip—for a family of four—in 100 major U.S. cities.
To get the most accurate price tag, the study analyzes airfare, lodging, meals, and rental car costs from 2025 (the most recent apples-to-apples comparable data). The researchers also compare the figures to 2019 (before COVID) to see where travel inflation has hit the hardest.
Key Findings, With Data for Detroit, MI
- Overall vacation prices are up 14.5% nationwide. Across the 100 cities analyzed, the average cost of a four-night trip for a family of four grew by 14.5% since 2019, reaching $4,668 in 2025.

- Total vacation cost to Detroit: Factoring in everything—flights, lodging, meals, and a rental car—the total cost of a four-night family vacation for four to Detroit is now $4,644.
- Primary cost driver: The largest contributor to rising costs in Detroit was meals, which increased by 32.1%, reflecting broader inflationary pressure in that category.
