Owning a home is often a key milestone of financial independence, yet rising home prices and student debt make it challenging for young Americans. Some states stand out for higher rates of young homeowners, giving youth a head start in building wealth and stability. A new study by Premier Timber Frame Builders ranks U.S. states by the share of 15-24-year-olds who own homes. It highlights which states offer the most opportunities for young adults to enter the housing market and the economic and cultural factors behind these trends.
Utah leads the nation with 10.66% of young adults owning homes, benefiting from affordable suburban housing, strong local economies, and cultural emphasis on early family formation.
Iowa follows with 9.83%, where low housing costs and stable jobs help youth purchase homes earlier than many other states.
South Dakota ranks third at 9.60%, supported by rural living and smaller cities that keep housing affordable.
Wyoming has 9.43% of young homeowners, aided by low population density and accessible property prices.
Indiana’s young homeowners make up 9.17%, driven by affordable suburban housing in cities like Indianapolis.
Minnesota records 9.12% of young adults owning homes, with opportunities in the Twin Cities and supportive programs for first-time buyers.
North Dakota has 8.90% young homeowners, helped by strong energy and agriculture jobs and affordable small-town housing.
Kansas reaches 8.73%, where lower-cost urban housing in Wichita and Topeka enables earlier homeownership.
West Virginia has 8.56% of young adults owning homes, supported by rural affordability and smaller community markets.
