- Lea County Regional Airport in New Mexico has the highest average delay time at 37.24 minutes per flight
- Victoria Regional Airport in Texas comes second, with Arizona’s Prescott Regional Airport in third
- St. Cloud Regional Airport in Minnesota experiences the shortest delays at just 1.77 minutes per flight
- Michigan’s, Houghton County Memorial Airport stands out with one of the longest average arrival delays in the country
New research has identified the US airports with the shortest and longest delays.
The study by student travel company Rustic Pathways analyzed data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics on arriving flight punctuality between May 2024 and May 2025, the latest data available, to reveal which airports had the longest delays per arriving flight on average. In this case, the delay in minutes is the difference between the scheduled arrival time and the actual arrival time.
For spring break travelers flying from Michigan, airport delays are worth considering. Among the study’s findings, Houghton County Memorial Airport stands out with one of the longest average arrival delays in the country, at nearly 32 minutes per flight. This suggests that smaller regional airports in Michigan can experience notable schedule disruptions. For those departing from larger hubs in the state, delays may vary, so planning ahead, checking real‑time flight statuses, and allowing extra time at the airport can help ensure a smoother spring break journey.

Pennsylvania’s Arnold Palmer Regional Airport (LBE) was ninth with 5 minutes and 48 seconds (5.80 minutes) delays.
Another Alaskan entry in Nome Airport (OME) took the tenth spot with 5 minutes and 50 seconds (5.83 minutes) delays over 785 flights.
Shayne Fitz-Coy, CEO of Rustic Pathways, commented on the findings:
“The data shows many smaller regional airports face issues with flight punctuality. This could be due to these airports having fewer resources to handle delays and less flexibility in their flight schedules. This can be seen in that seven of the 10 airports experiencing the most delays handled fewer than 1,000 flights in the study period. Looking at the data overall also shows us that carrier delays account for 37% of delay minutes at each US airport, with 6.91% delays coming from weather, highlighting the fact that many flights are delayed at the fault of a flight operator, and not just natural occurrences.”
