The Odyssey in IMAX

The Odyssey is the first-ever feature film shot entirely with IMAX Film Cameras. This historic achievement marks a major milestone for filmmaking, allowing audiences to experience the unique cinematic scope and impact of IMAX for the entirety of the film. The highest-resolution cameras in the world, the IMAX 15/65mm Cameras deliver nearly 10x the resolution of conventional 35mm film and 3x the resolution of standard, 5-perf 65mm film cameras, creating an unmatched level of detail and immersion.
The Odyssey was shot with a combination of original and new IMAX Film Cameras. Developed in close collaboration with Christopher Nolan and Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, this new camera is named “The Keighley” in honor of IMAX’s late Chief Quality Officer David Keighley and his wife, Patricia, both pioneers of the 70mm format. The new camera delivers spectacular image quality while incorporating updated software, improved functionality, and reduced noise.
As part of the new camera, a groundbreaking “blimp” enabled sync sound capture – recording audio in perfect alignment with the image – a breakthrough that made it possible for Nolan to shoot The Odyssey entirely in IMAX. Hoyte van Hoytema called it “the most essential piece of equipment on this production.”
The Odyssey features IMAX’s exclusive 1.90:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio for the entire film. With the image filling the giant IMAX screen from top to bottom, moviegoers will be fully immersed in the action. In select IMAX with Laser and IMAX 70mm Film locations, the film will be presented entirely in IMAX’s towering 1.43:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio, delivering the largest image area in the world.
Special engagements of The Odyssey will be presented in IMAX 70mm Film, the largest format ever used in motion pictures, delivering extraordinary texture and resolution. These screenings will showcase the film entirely in IMAX’s 1.43:1 exclusive Expanded Aspect Ratio.

The Odyssey and IMAX’s new Film Camera – Fun Facts

The Odyssey used 2.1 million feet of film, longer than the distance from Toronto to New York.
During the production, over 260,000 feet of film was shot with the new IMAX Film Cameras and nearly 1,000,000 feet of film was shot inside the new “blimp”.
The carbon fiber components of the new IMAX Film Cameras are the same as the ones used for Formula 1 race cars and high-performance supercars.
