Air Force Veteran Living with TBI and PTSD Faces Heartbreaking Choice as His Hero Cat and Devoted Dog Both Need Urgent Medical Care; Paws of War Launches Mission to Help.

As the nation prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence,

many will reflect on the sacrifices made by generations of service members who defended those freedoms. For one U.S. Air Force veteran in Torrance, California, that sacrifice did not end when he returned home.

Today, Jason Bishop, who served with Air Combat Command in Bosnia from 1996 to 1999, is facing another battle, one that threatens the two animals who have helped him survive life after service.

Jason suffered a traumatic brain injury during his military service that ended his military career and left him living with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. While the visible signs of service may have faded, the challenges remain. Through some of his darkest days, two faithful companions have stood by his side: Sebastian, a heroic cat who once saved his family from a house fire, and Colt, a devoted dog who has become his constant source of comfort, stability and unconditional love.

Now both animals urgently need medical care and surgery that Jason cannot afford on his own. In response, Paws of War has launched an emergency fundraising campaign to help save the two animals that have become a lifeline for a deserving American hero.

“As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, it is a reminder that our responsibility to veterans does not end when they come home,” said Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “Jason answered the call to serve his country and continues to face the challenges that came home with him. For many veterans, their pets are far more than companions. They provide stability, comfort, purpose and emotional support during life’s most difficult moments. Sebastian and Colt have helped carry Jason through some of his toughest battles, and now it is our turn to be there for them. We hope Americans will join us in giving back to a veteran who has already given so much to this country.”

Public support is being sought to help cover the medical expenses needed to restore Sebastian’s and Colt’s health and quality of life.

“After my military service ended, there were days when the challenges felt overwhelming,” said Jason Bishop, a U.S. Air Force veteran. “Through it all, Sebastian and Colt have been by my side. Sebastian once saved our family from a house fire, and Colt has helped me navigate the invisible wounds that followed me home. They have given me comfort, stability and unconditional love when I needed it most. Now they need help, and I am doing everything I can to make sure they get the care they deserve.”

A Hero Cat Who Once Saved His Family

Sebastian is no ordinary cat. Several years ago, a fire broke out in the family’s home during the night. Rather than run from danger, Sebastian alerted the family and helped wake them in time to escape, ultimately saving the lives of those he loved.

Today, the elderly cat is battling a painful dental abscess caused by a severely damaged tooth. The condition has made it difficult for him to eat and has contributed to weight loss and ongoing discomfort. Jason has done everything possible to keep Sebastian comfortable while trying to raise the funds needed for treatment. Despite his pain, Sebastian remains the gentle guardian of the household, watching over the family’s other pets and offering the same quiet companionship he always has.

A Devoted Dog Who Became a Lifeline

Jason adopted Colt in 2020, never realizing how important the dog would become in his life. What began as a rescue quickly turned into something much deeper.

For years, Colt has been Jason’s loyal companion, helping him navigate the daily realities of living with PTSD and the lingering effects of his service-related injuries. Through every challenge, setback and victory, Colt has remained faithfully by his side.

Now Colt is suffering from a painful condition that requires a right stifle arthroscopy and TPLO surgery to restore mobility and improve his quality of life. The cost of those procedures is overwhelming for a veteran already facing significant challenges.

“Anyone who has experienced the bond between a veteran and their pet understands that these animals often become part of the healing process,” Misseri added. “They do not judge. They do not leave. They simply show up every day with unconditional love. That is exactly what Sebastian and Colt have done for Jason.”

A Mission Rooted in Service

Jason’s sister, Dawn, a U.S. Army veteran herself, said the animals have played a critical role in helping her brother continue moving forward.

“I am extremely proud of Jason,” she said. “Everyone has challenges life puts in our paths, and being a veteran myself, I understand how those layers can impact even the most ordinary aspects of life. Jason has never given up, even when everything seemed unmanageable. For the last several years, Sebastian and Colt have been by his side. They are true companions, helping to steady him not only physically, but more importantly on the mental health level. They are both heroes to everyone who loves Jason.”

As Americans celebrate 250 years of freedom and honor those who have served to protect it, Paws of War hopes this mission serves as a reminder that many veterans continue fighting battles long after they leave the military. Sometimes their greatest source of strength comes with four legs, a wagging tail or a gentle purr. Now those heroes need help.
