Starting an Etsy Shop for Christmas? The Costs That Can Wipe Out Your Profit

Resparked’s Santiago Roa explains the pricing and production decisions that can determine whether a holiday craft business makes money.
Searches for “personalized friend gifts”
have increased 1,400% year over year on Etsy, according to the marketplace’s latest seasonal report, offering a potential opportunity for small makers preparing for the Christmas selling season.
The report, published on October 14, also records a 37% increase in Friendsmas party-supply sales, pointing to spending around celebrations with friends as well as traditional family gatherings.
For people considering selling handmade gifts,
the figures provide a starting point for researching products. Turning that interest into a profitable business, however, requires a closer look at what each order costs to produce and deliver.
Santiago Roa of US crafting brand Resparked says first-time sellers should calculate the full cost of completing an order before committing to inventory or setting their prices.
“Personalization gives a small maker a way to create something specific to the person receiving it. A name, a meaningful date or a shared memory can become the reason someone chooses that gift. But the work starts before you pick up your tools. You might spend time discussing the design, checking a spelling, preparing a sample and making changes. That time needs to be accounted for in the price.”
Work out what remains from each sale
A product’s selling price must cover more than the materials used to make it. Packaging, marketplace and payment fees, shipping costs absorbed by the seller, and time spent completing the order all affect what remains.
Equipment, advertising and other business expenses also need to be recovered across sales. Mistakes and remakes can reduce that margin further.
“If you price something by adding a few dollars to the material cost, you can end up with very little left for your work,” Santiago explains.
“Time yourself completing an order from the first customer message to the packed parcel. That gives you a much more useful starting point than timing the engraving or assembly alone.”
Keep the first product range manageable
For a new seller, a limited range can make it easier to understand production costs and deliver consistent results. One product with clearly defined customization options also allows the maker to test the process before taking on more complicated requests.
“Decide what the customer can change and show those choices clearly. That might mean a choice of three designs, a name and a date.
“Every additional option can mean more messages, more preparation and more opportunities for mistakes. Start with something you can make reliably, then expand when you understand the work involved.”
Test whether interest becomes orders
Search growth can help identify a category worth investigating, but it does not establish what a particular shop will sell or how much customers will pay.
Santiago recommends making samples and testing a small batch before purchasing large quantities of materials. Sellers can then assess which designs attract paid orders, whether their prices cover costs and how long fulfillment takes.
“Your first few orders can tell you a lot. You learn which questions customers ask, which parts take longer than expected and whether the price still works once you have completed the job. Use that information before spending more on stock.”
Set an order limit before the holiday rush
Personalized products require production time as well as shipping time. Sellers need to leave room for customer approvals, corrections and replacement materials when deciding how many orders to accept.
“A busy shop can quickly become difficult to manage if every order requires more work than you allowed for. Set a weekly capacity based on the hours you actually have. The aim is to deliver good work on time and be paid properly for doing it.”
