Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit is on a mission this holiday season to tackle the bed poverty crisis in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties where 20,000 children without beds sleep on the floor, a sofa or with a family member each night.

The nonprofit launched the “$250 Beds for Kids Challenge” and is engaging the community to raise $250,000 through December 31.

The funds will provide 1,000 complete bed sets at $250 each which include twin mattresses, foundations, pillows, sheets and comforters. The Karen and Drew Peslar Foundation will match the first $25,000 raised in November dollar for dollar, and Serta Restokraft Mattress Company of Romulus is donating one twin mattress for every nine that are funded. “A bed is more than a place to sleep; it tells a child, in a quiet yet powerful way, ‘you matter,’” said Diane Charles, president and CEO of Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit. “It gives them a place to grow, to feel secure, to discover who they are, and to dream about who they might become. Every child deserves that kind of beginning, and the freedom to imagine a future without limits.”

Two other Michigan family-owned and operated businesses are participating in the “$250 Beds for Kids Challenge.”

Wachler Estate Collection & Diamonds in Birmingham is auctioning a pair of 14k white gold, 4.10 carat total weight, brilliant cut lab diamond stud earrings (2+ carats each) valued at $1,850 on Instagram at @dwachler with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the challenge. Hagopian World of Rugs and Cleaning Services is engaging its customers and encouraging them to donate.

Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit is challenging individuals, families, coworkers and community groups to raise $2,500 to put 10 children in beds of their own. People can create a fundraising team page or join an existing team on the campaign website, https://secure.qgiv.com/event/bedsforkids/.

The Furniture Bank of Metro Detroit, the oldest furniture bank in North America, has provided essential furniture and mattresses to more than 80,000 families in need throughout Oakland, Wayne, and Macomb Counties.
