Are you too Busy to Cook?

Let’s face it, life is busy! Unfortunately, we tend to look for shortcuts. Prime example…cooking at home. Granted, it is so much easier to pick up something (such as pre-packaged food), where all you have to do is nuke it in the oven and microwave. This can easily become an unhealthy habit instead of taking the time to actually cook a healthy and nutritious meal. Home-cooking is becoming a thing of the past in homes. Why wouldn’t it be when parents are getting home late from work or picking kiddos up from basketball or hockey, etc into the late hours? This shortcut is cutting into the health of many families. What changes can be made?
There are a lot of excuses in the book for not cooking, but there are also a lot of ways to work around this dilemma:

- Cook on the weekends for the whole week and reheat on those late nights.
- Be a meal planner for the following week. Shop for those items you need for your meal planning so you are prepared. This cuts down on worrying each night what to prepare and not having the item in the house to make it.
- Utilize your crock-pot! There are tons of meals that can be created in the crock-pot that can cook for hours unattended. Start off with a frozen meat item on low. Crock-potting offers amazing taste and meat falls off the bone when you’re ready to eat.
- Double your batches when cooking and freeze the other for another night.
- Chop veggies, meat, etc., items to prepare the night before so you’re ready to just throw a few things together when it’s time to cook.
- Totally prepare your meal the night before so all you have to do is throw it from fridge to the oven when you get home and by the time everyone is home and unwound for the day…your meal is ready.
Planning ahead can increase the health of your family and the sanity of what to cook each night. Give it a try! It works wonders at my house!
