People of all ages and origins get arthritis including children. The disease causes painful and progressive deterioration of bones, ligaments, cartilage and tendons. It’s the leading cause of disability in the United States affecting more than 2.3 million adults and 10,300 children in Michigan. The cause is unknown and there is no cure.

The 2014 Grand Rapids Walk to Cure Arthritis will honor 3-year-old Mackenzie Proefrock from Norton Shores. As a 2-year-old, Mackenzie’s parents noticed that she struggled to walk, sit in a chair and sleep. She shied away from physical contact with others and had sudden angry outbursts for no apparent reason. Mackenzie was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis. Mackenzie started pre-school this past fall and, with meditation and therapy, she is slowly regaining her strength and confidence.

“This disease does not discriminate. It does not know if a person is three or thirty-years-old,” said Mackenzie’s mom, Jeanne. “No person should have to experience the pain of arthritis, especially a child who can’t understand why she hurts so much. The 2014 Grand Rapids Walk to Cure Arthritis will help us get closer to finding a cure.”
