SELF-REG {Book Review}

I received a copy of “SELF-REG – How to Help Your Child (and You) Break the Stress Cycle and Successfully Engage with Life” ($28.00 value) in exchange for this promotion. Any opinions expressed here are honest and my own.

SELF-REG reveals:

* There are no bad kids.   Often our response to a child who is acting out can make a child more reactive, defensive, defiant, anxious, or withdrawn.    Problematic behavior exists for a reason.   When you can address and identify those causes, the behavior changes.

*How you can tell if you’re dealing with misbehavior or stress behavior.

*Our emphasis on will power and self-control is often counter-productive.  You cannot exert will power if your circuitry is overloaded.  What most of us don’t know is that self-regulation is what makes acts of self-control possible.

*Our kids feed off our stress and we feed off of theirs!  Dr. Shanker explains how and why parents and children often become locked in a cycle of spiraling stress and what can be done to break the cycle.  Before you can teach our children how to self-regulate we need to develop our own self-regulation skills.

*How many of the “tricks” parents use to calm or quiet our children (such as giving them an ipad to watch or video game to play) actually makes it harder for your child to learn how to calm down.

*The link between behavior and energy:  Dr. Shanker explains hyper-arousal and hypo-arousal, how they affect behavior, and how they can be managed

SELF-REG – How to Help Your Child (and You) Break the Stress Cycle and Successfully Engage with Life is chocked full of helpful information on de-stressing your kiddos.  Right off the bat it makes readers realize the STRESS that is surrounding our children today and how they can deal with it.  Dr. Shanker pulls away from actual disciplining children when “problem children” arise and more or less looks for the barriers that may be stressing our children out and removing those barriers to manage stress.  Stressors can be just plain over-stimulation from sound, light, smells, textures, sitting or standing, etc.  Recognizing the stressors and eliminating those items or make changes to those items can help SELF-REG oneself.  (Dr. Shanker shares some real stories about kids and parents he’s met along the way and how he helped them overcome their problematic stressful life.) Parents can help children recognize these stressors and become aware they are over-stressed and why so they can in-turn SELF-REG themselves.  Great learning tool for parents also to teach themselves to be back to calm.

This book also has a great Index in the back so readers can locate keywords and find them quickly.
