About The Myth of the ADHD Child, Revised Edition:
“A fully revised and updated edition of the groundbreaking book on tackling the root causes of children’s attention and behavior problems rather than masking the symptoms with medication.”
More than twenty years after Dr. Thomas Armstrong’s Myth of the A.D.D. Child first published, he presents much needed updates and insights in this substantially revised edition. When The Myth of the A.D.D. Child was first published in 1995, Dr. Thomas Armstrong made the controversial argument that many behaviors labeled as ADD or ADHD are simply a child’s active response to complex social, emotional, and educational influences. In this fully revised and updated edition, Dr. Armstrong shows readers how to address the underlying causes of a child’s attention and behavior problems in order to help their children implement positive changes in their lives.
The rate of ADHD diagnosis has increased sharply, along with the prescription of medications to treat it. Now needed more than ever, this book includes fifty-one new non-drug strategies to help children overcome attention and behavior problems, as well as updates to the original fifty proven strategies.
Review:
I really liked this book! Now mind you, I don’t have any personal experience with ADHD children, but I LOVED the concept Armstrong was trying to convey here. He delivers 101 Ways to Improve Your Child’s Behavior and Attention Span Without Drugs, Labels, or Coercion…as labeled on the front of his book and I have to say they are EXCELLENT.
Now mind you, I’ve never really been a big one on drugs for anything unless it is absolutely necessary, so these techniques seemed spot on!
Armstrong first begins with ADHD Myths and then the ADHD Epidemic and then digs into the 101 Ways to Improve the Behavior and Attention Span. He labels each way and the Book Contents could easily be a great starting point to glace at first so you’re not overwhelmed into so many concepts. Then he goes into Strategy #1 thru #100….For example…let your child fidget…channel creative energies into the arts…emphasize diversity not disability. So many habits society is telling us is wrong, may be ok.
After each Strategy, Armstrong has a resource to contact to learn more about this concept, which I think is HUGE. So many times we read or learn a concept and then struggle to put it into motion and when we do, it’s so nice to have a resource to contact if there is more information to be had. Great concept!
All in all, great book! It’s also a long book, but doesn’t have to be read front to back immediately, as it can easily be a book you can pick up and read and try a strategy and go from there.
The Myth of the ADHD Child can be purchased at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and anywhere books are sold.
