Downtown Milford Celebrates its 150th Holiday Season!

MILFORD, Mich. – Downtown Milford will end its 150th year on a high note with events and activities sure to spread holiday cheer. This year’s holiday programming kicks off Thursday, Nov. 21 with The Big Reveal and the weekly Dinner’s On Us program.

“We’re excited to celebrate the holiday season in downtown Milford – and the final months of Milford’s sesquicentennial anniversary – with our community,” says Ann Barnette, executive director of the Milford Downtown Development Authority. “The holiday season is always a special time in Milford, both to our merchants and residents helping create special memories for families and supporting local business.”

To help encourage people to come downtown to shop and dine local this holiday season, the Milford DDA is hosting a special “check-in” campaign on its Downtown Milford Facebook page.

From Nov. 18 to Dec. 6, downtown visitors are encouraged to check-in at “Downtown Milford” on the social network using the hashtag #MeetMeInMilford for a chance to win a $300 gift card to a downtown merchant or restaurant of their choice.  Rules and details will be shared to

Events this holiday season include:

Milford’s Big Reveal, Thursday, Nov. 21

A community favorite, The Big Reveal is one of the most magical downtown events year after year. Nearly 40 businesses between Library Street and Commerce Road along Main Street will package the outside of their storefronts as wrapped gifts. On the Thursday before Thanksgiving, when the clock strikes 6:30 p.m., children will tear open the gift-wrapped businesses revealing intricate and exciting holiday displays. No one knows what’s under the wrapping paper until the community helps unwrap the displays. In addition to the joys of unwrapping storefronts, participating businesses will offer punch, cookies and other complimentary snacks throughout the night. Arriving before 6:30 p.m. is encouraged.

Dinner’s On Us, Thursday, Nov. 21 – Thursday, Dec. 19

Milford business owners and community partners may be picking up your check this holiday season! To show their appreciation for patrons in downtown Milford, groups will be covering tabs for random diners through the Dinner’s On Us program. Keep an eye out as they visit downtown restaurants every Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., from Nov. 21 through Dec. 19, excluding Thanksgiving. The Milford Downtown Development Authority (DDA) supports this program with the help of donations received primarily from local businesses.

Give Back Friday, Friday, Nov. 29

Over the last decade, chaotic shopping has overtaken the day after Thanksgiving, and in some cases, Thanksgiving itself. The Friday after Thanksgiving, downtown Milford merchants will participate in the fourth annual Give Back Friday event that puts a feel-good twist on Black Friday. Stores and restaurants will offer special sales, discounts and unique gifts throughout the day. Participating businesses will also donate a percentage of their proceeds to a local charity or nonprofit of their choice.

Christmas Open House, Thursday, Dec. 5

Santa Claus is comin’ to town, making his grand appearance in downtown Milford during the annual Christmas Open House. The event will feature strolling musical entertainment, horse-drawn carriage rides, special deals at downtown restaurants and more. The evening will kick off with a Christmas tree lighting at 5:45 p.m. in the middle of Main Street at the Center Street Park. Keep an eye on Main Street afterward as Santa himself will arrive on a Milford Fire Department engine at 6 p.m. Throughout the night, many stores will offer holiday deals and refreshments, while patrons shop locally-made crafts, décor and children’s toys perfect for the gift-giving season. During the event, donations of canned or dry foods will be accepted at the Center Street Park benefiting the Community Sharing Outreach Center.

Visits with Santa, Saturday, Nov. 30 – Saturday, Dec. 21

He’s making his list and checking it twice! Santa will be at the Village Center Mall, 400 N. Main, behind the Village Toy Shoppe from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., every Saturday from Nov. 30 until Dec. 21 as well as from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5 during Milford’s Christmas Open House, Thursday, Dec. 12 and Thursday, Dec. 19. Be sure to bring your own camera as a professional photographer will not be provided.
