8 Tips to Follow When Moving with Young Children

 By Rayanne Morriss

Moving can seem like a Herculean task when you have children in tow. All of the normal tasks associated with this process are amplified when you need to worry about the needs of your children during this time of great transition. Here are eight tips to follow when moving with young children to help the process to go more smoothly.

1. Start Early

All of the organizing, packing, cleaning, moving, and unpacking is going to take much longer than anticipated when you are balancing the needs of your children. For this reason, you need to start the process earlier than you think to allow yourself plenty of time.

2. Make the Most Out of Kid-Free Time

With so many things to get done when moving, it is important to not waste valuable time. Take advantage of kid-free time to organize and pack. Turning naptime into a time of productivity for you will help you to make sure that you are on top of your moving schedule and that you do not waste time.

3. Give Your Children Tasks to Complete

You can make your children feel good about their contribution to the move by giving them kid-friendly tasks to complete. Maybe that means sorting their clothes or organizing their new bedroom. Recruiting your kids to take over simple jobs will help you to knock things off of your own to-do list while also keeping them busy so that you can tackle the harder jobs.

4. Hire a Babysitter

You will be amazed at what you can get done without kids underfoot. Consider hiring a babysitter during the last few days of packing so that you can power through all of those last-minute items without worrying about keeping your kids entertained. Even paying somebody to take the kids to the park for a few hours will help immensely.

5. Turn to the Professionals

If you want to take the hassle out of this experience completely, you may want to consider hiring a professional. For example, if you are moving from South Florida to Michigan, there are many moving companies in South Florida or the particular locale that can help you during every stage of the process. From packing to moving and to unpacking, the professionals will take the work off of your hands so that you can focus on your kids during this unsettled time. Hiring a professional is without a doubt the easiest way to move and keep your sanity.  If moving from Bellevue, WA to Michigan, consider moving companies bellevue.

6. Pack an Overnight Bag

You can make the transition from the old home into the new one easier by packing an overnight bag for both the last night in the previous place and the first night in the new place. This will ensure that your kids are not without their favorite security items or other essentials that you may need during this time of transition. You do not want to be tearing apart moving boxes in the middle of the night in your new home looking for that teddy bear because your little one cannot sleep. Plan ahead by being prepared.

7. Be Patient

It is important to temper your expectations so that you do not expect too much of your kids right after the move. It will likely take them time to adjust to their new surroundings. This means that you may need to be more patient than usual with establishing bedtime routines as they become comfortable with the new home. Practicing patience and grace with children will yield the best results as everyone adjusts to the new environment.

8. Reach Out to New Neighbors

Do not be shy about reaching out to your new neighbors when you move in. They might be your biggest source of help as you begin to unpack and get settled into the new digs. This might be especially helpful if the neighbors have children that can keep your kids occupied. Making new friends right away will help your kids to feel acclimated to their new neighborhood and happy to be there.

Having a plan in place before you start this process will help the move go more smoothly both for you and your children. This is undoubtedly an exciting time for your family. You can make the most out of this by following these eight proven tips.
