A smoothie is an excellent way to eat more fruits and vegetables, something a few Americans do regularly. With a couple of hardy greens, you can make a quick meal that is perfect for when you’re on-the-go. Some people go further and have them as their main source of energy, which is one way to embrace the concept!

However, like all things, smoothies have their pros and cons. The last thing you want is for the negatives to outweigh the positives, yet this is what happens when you make silly mistakes. The errors are so small that you might not even know you’re doing them. Still, the impact they have on your wellbeing, both mentally and physically, can be considerable.

So, if you’re a smoothie operator, the key is to cut out the mistakes to get the best results. To do that, here are four problems you should focus on, and how to fix them.

Not Adding A Thickener

When you imagine a smoothie, it should be thick and creamy, almost as if you need to eat it with a spoon. However, the consistency won’t be right if you don’t use the correct ingredients. Yes, smoothies are fantastic for using up old fruits and veggies in the cupboard, yet you will require something that acts as a thickening agent.

You shouldn’t have to look too far because mangoes and bananas are ideal for the job due to their bulkiness. Alternatively, you can add a teaspoon of flour or cornflour to thicken up the liquid. If your smoothie is too light, it won’t have the filling effect you are after. As a result, the temptation to snack could be too strong to resist.

By getting the texture right, you will cut out the need for extra, needless calories that do nothing but harm your diet.

Using Sugar Or Sugar Alternatives

A smoothie should be sweet, which is why sugars and sugar alternatives are common among smoothie-lovers. The problem is, even a small spoon of it can lead to health issues, especially if the white or brown stuff is refined. A single teaspoon has 16 calories, so throwing granulated sweeteners into the mix will go over the weekly recommended amount.

However, a smoothie isn’t as appetizing unless it is sweet, so what is the solution? Easy – choose fruits that are high in fructose and citrus. This cranberry, apple, and orange juice recipe is incredible because it uses the natural flavors of the ingredients to make the liquid sharp. Plus, it’s low in cholesterol and high in antioxidants.

Cranberries, apples, and oranges are only three examples of fruits that are very sharp. Therefore, you should have no problem mixing up your ingredients to prevent boredom.

Too Much Ice

Depending on the time of year, it’s nice to put in ice to cool down the juice and make it extra palatable. Using ice might seem fine. There’s not much you can’t put frozen blocks of water into to make it worse! However, too many cubes can prevent healthy ingredients in the smoothies from dissolving.

For instance, the excess water will make oil from coconuts rise to the top. Not only is this unappealing to look at and to drink, but the fats won’t digest as well as they take longer to absorb. This doesn’t mean you must forego ice cubes altogether, far from it. Instead, try adding it last to ensure the mixture is perfectly blended.

Another option is to freeze the coconut milk. That way, it will blend better and the temperature will ensure the juice is cooler and more refreshing.

Adding Too Many Superfoods

A look at a list of superfoods will tell you that most of them are ideal for blending. From berries to avocados and kale, there isn’t much you can’t make a smoothie out of. Still, that doesn’t mean you should. Adding too many superfoods isn’t as healthy as you might assume for two reasons.

Firstly, the flavor will get funky. Seen as a smoothie is a healthy and tasty way to regulate your body, this is problematic as it could stop you from drinking as much and returning to bad habits. Secondly, the effects of superfoods plateau after a while. This means more than two or three ingredients won’t be overly helpful.

As a result, it’s better to pick a selection and keep things simple. Otherwise, you might find that the flavor turns you off to smoothies.
